Looking for a good combo of powder- bullet for my Husquavarna 9000 nitro 300 win mag. Loaded 30 years ago and now that the old lady left I would like to get back into it. Hunt mostly deer and elk.

I have a Winchester M 70 and use it for smallish whitetails and hogs. I load IMR 4350 and 150 gr Nosler bt's as it makes a VERY accurate load in my rifle.

I would expect you to be using heavier bullets, but I would still use the IMR 4350 for it. One thing I noticed. My groups tightened up quite a bit when I went to magnum primers.

Good luck finding the 'sweet spot' load for your uses.

Same as above, except 165gr N BT's. They may be a little on the explosive side for elk, but you'd have to ask someone else.

My rifle is a Ruger Hawkeye, ss with laminate stock. My best load is the 165 gr TSX with a near max load of IMR 4831. Barnes indicates that IMR 4831 was the most accurate powder for that bullet and it hasn't disappointed. 1/2 moa at 100 yards. Haven't had a chance to shoot farther yet. Next best load is the 180 gr Nosler BT with near max load of RL22.

Good luck.

The tsx might be a good choice for your application, if it shoots in your rifle. I took four whitetail with it this year. All hits were in the boiler room. They ran like lightning for 10 to 40 yards, but only because they didn't know they were already dead. Blood trail a blind man could follow. I'm sure it is tough enough for elk and it clearly opens fast enough for deer.

Same bullet with a stout charge of H1000 was my go to load, but the recoil in a hunting weight rifle was more than I cared for. Killed on both ends. :)

Win 215 primer, IMR 4350, 70 Grains, Accubond 180 close to 3000 FPS in 26" Rem. 700 zero at 200, -7 at 300, -20 at 400 -41 at 500 use your range finder, it is your friend! I shot a deer last Saturday at 195 yards, when I took the offside shoulder off the heart fell out of the exit hole! Amazing the deer still went 40 yards thru thick brush!

Yeah, these loads are not the best option if you plan to spend the day at the range. I limit myself to about 30 in a session at the bench. Never noticed the recoil in the field.

Now, if you step up to something with 2-3x the recoil of a .300WM, like my Rem 870 shooting 3.5" tungsten turkey loads...you tend to notice when the recoil knocks your glasses sideways and your hat off your head. Still don't care about the recoil in the field, but sighting that gun in was not fun. Required 8 shots, 4 or 5 more than I care for.

I've tried a bunch of different powders for 300 WM, my favorites, and especially for larger game such as elk has been IMR-7828 or RL22 and a 165 gr. Speer Hot Core. I've yet to have anything but a good clean kill happen with this combination.

But there are a bunch of really great powders that will drive a well constructed 165 gr. at typical 300 Win. mag. authority. H1000, RL22, IMR-4831, IMR-4350, my goodness, the list goes on and on.

I've been hooked on the Speer Hot Core for almost 3 decades, so that will be my single recommendation for a good elk projectile. I've also been very pleased with it on all other big game, including deer, antelope, bear. But one particular characteristic to be aware of, is it doesn't do well at lower velocities, it needs good velocity of 3000+ fps..

My load I use in my Winchester M70 300wm is

Nosler brass
H4831sc 73.5gr (warning this is .5gr over max per manual)
CCI Large Magnum Rifle primers
Nosler 180gr Accubond
Shoulder bumped back .002"
.025" off the lands (just fits the mag box)
