30cal 150 grain fmj bullet help

Hi I bought roughly 50 fmj with exposed lead base 150 grain bullets at a gun show. They have a crimp around them and he thought they were old military pull downs. I'm only gonna use them for plinking in 308 and 3006 with imr 4895.

So can I use any 150 grain fmj data or is there certain ones I should use?

Are you saying they have a crimp around the base? Or are you describing a canelure around the mid section of the bullet?

Considering they have an exposed lead base, which I'm assuming you are describing, I would be cautious about the pressures you load them too. 50k-60k perssures seem high for a bare bottom projectile to me? I've personally never heard of a jacketed high power rifle bullet with an exposed base, but that may be a common bullet for a particular purpose for all I know. Learn something new every day in this hobby, so I hope someone here will elaborate.

They sound like M2 bullets, and millions and millions of them have been fired through .30-06 rifles. Just load them with regular 150 gr. FMJ data.

The 7.62 version (.308 Winchester) is usually a 147 gr. FMJ, and you use 150 gr. data for those, too.

I shoot em all the time in my .308 and 30-06. great plinking bullet. normal data works fine
 
For 308, I tested some surplus ammunition, got the velocities, decided it was too hot for me, and did load development. My self imposed velocity limit was 2700 fps with a 150. This is easy on the gun, the brass, and me.

AA2520 is a ball powder that Accurate Arms says has the same pressure curve as IMR 4895. I have heard others post data that a 150 FMJ with 42.5 grains IMR 4895 is an excellent load for them, and 42.5 grs AA2520 was right at 2700 fps, so it should be just fine. IMR3031 is a very old stick powder and shoots great in the 308, 40 grs ought to be a good load, 41 should be a max.

In the 30-06, 47.5 grains IMR 4895 would be a duplicate of US ball.
