Hey Guys,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what would be a good starting load that i could work up with Unique in the 40 S&W. I'am using a Winchester TC 165 GR. bullet. I checked in my books and can't seem to find to much data for the 165 gr bullet. I'am really just looking for a nice target load. I'll be shooting them out of a G22 and a Sig 226.

Thanks
Loco

I use 5.2 gr of Unique with 180gr hardcast lead and FMJ-TC in .40S&W. Shoots nicely. Should be a good starting point for the lighter bullet as well.

Loco,

I have been shooting Rainier 165gr. JHP behind 5.7gr of Unique and my velocity through the Chrono was 940 fps. It's a mild load and according to Steve's page with 165 gr bullet your can run 5.2 grains to 7.2 grains of Unique.

By the way I am shooting it in a H&K USP for comparison.

I, also, have been using the 165gr. Rainier FP with Unique. I have loaded up 3 power levels depending on how much snort I want to practice with. The light load is 5.7gr. 1.130" Win brass, CCI SP. It functions 100% in my Sig P239. Start there.

You could go higher since you have jacketed bullets. I have loaded Remington 165gr. Golden Sabers at 7.2gr. 1.135" for a practice s.d. load. You may not need to go higher for plinking/target use.

I use 6 grains of Unique behind a 165 grain Ranier, chrono's 1000 fps, very nice load, soft recoil, accurate. This is pretty much my go-to target practice load.

I use 4.5gr of Unique behind a 170gr SWC, and it functions well. It's a good economical practice load that is pretty similar in recoil to most 9mm range ammo.

I shoot the 165gr Raniers using 5.5gr of Unique; works fine and gives enough POOOSH to let you know that you're not shooting a 9mm.

Have you tried Hodgdon Longshot for the 40 S&W? I use it and found it works extremly well in many different loadings, especially for 165gr bullets.

Thanks guys for all your posts you all have been a great help.

Thanks again.

I tried 5.5 grains of Unique with my 165's, they were dribbling out of the ejection port, of my XD-40, I upped it to 6 grains, that gave me a normal ejection pattern.

my fav load has been 5.7of unique with 180gr rainier plated bullets.
using fed brass and win sp primers.
this is for my M&P40

Thousands of rounds

of Unique 5.6 gr with a 165 gr plated bullet or a jacketed bullet in my Glock 22 have worked great with no pressure signs.

I've also loaded and fired plenty with accurate # 5. 7.3 gr with a 165 gr plated bullet is very good, and with a 165 gr jacketed hollow point 7.7 gr averages 1000 fps over my chronograph with no pressure signs.

Either Accurate #5 or Unique are great all-around powders. These days they are all I use for .45 ACP, .357, and .40.
