$42 for a pound of powder?

Personally, I think CCI sure has been coming thru with more and more primers of all varieties of late, everything except BR4's! Have not seen WSR in a very long time!

No poor planning here. I have everything i need. I have some reloader15 but thought i'd add to my supply. And you're right about a pound of powder, but i wouldnt even think about 1 lb. I'm not whining and if you saw the number of customers he has not compared to what he used to have you would understand. This old man is getting grumpier every week and is driving customers away by the way he talks to them. You'd have to know him to understand what i'm saying. Heck, i even tried to sell him primers!

Well, there is no way you will ever make out buying just one (1) # of powder on line! The shipping and haz mat charges alone are 30 bucks.....LOL

Again your poor planning is the reason for you whining! Learn to plan ahead and if you order online make a big purchase to spread out the Haz Mat And Shipping Costs! Sad but true!

Right! But i wouldnt even think about 1lb on line.
No poor planning OR whining here. I have plenty. I just thought i'd add a little.

I just placed an order for 17 lbs of rifle powder last week, should be here Monday.:) 8 lbs of IMR 4895, 8 lbs of Accurate 2230 and 1 lb of H-4895. After shipping + hazmat, came out to $316, or $17.50/pound.:) That's how you order powder online.:D

Have any of you folk been in the retail business for yourselves? Does anyone miss the local sporting goods shops that fall to the big discounters or the on liners? Some may gouge, but some are trying to stay in business---think about it!

Sorry, not buying it. Literally or figuratively.

That's $14.00 dollars higher than any pound of powder I've seen at any gunshop in the last month and I've been across 4 states and dozens of shops, large and small.

I completely understand having to raise prices when to adjust for wholesale changes or increased shipping costs, but to jack up your overall markup because of the times is BS.

I consider $24.95/lb that Gander Mountain charges a ripoff (they are high on all their componets). But I drive right by it weekly and always stop to see if they have primers or powder- I'm going Powder Valley and Weidners from now on :neener:

One of the problems with the small shops is that he wholesalers ship when they have product. Since stuff is in short supply, it may be bits and pieces.

My local dealer got one box of 1,000 primers and had to pay Haz-Mat. Ended up costing him $41 for the 1k.

FWIW...a dealer around here has 8# jugs of Varget for $162. Not a great deal, but cheaper than a few months ago.

A couple of weeks ago I paid $32.00 for a lb. of win296 from Gander Mtn. But that included tax:cuss::cuss::cuss:

"..people will whine and stuff cause that their nature. Their poor planning is the reason for their whining!"

45ACP, interesting though.

So, it's your position that by good planning we could have avoided BO and company winning last Nov., which started the panic/hoarding buying well before the election, coming along with simultanious large new government ammo contracts to refill military armories that has resulted in nationwide "whining" and "stuff"?

For a new guy starting out or starting on a new caliber it is hard to buy a lot of powder. I like to be able to get a pound of something locally and am willing to pay a bit more for the privilege. $39.00 is abusing that privilege it would seem. I don't know how the small dealers get treated compared to the big outfits.

I'm having to develop alternate loads just to have a backup plan when Powder XXX is not available.

The poor attitiudes of some shop owners becomes tiresome.

I think I paid $15.99 for this lb of TiteGroup I bought to try. Luckily my stash of Bullseye got me through the gouging. I did have to pay $280 for 10k of primers.

Yeah you're right. I should have known I was going to try a new type of powder and ordered 50 pounds of it before I had even tried it. Gosh, I'm so ashamed. :banghead:

The only time I pay over $20 for a pound of powder locally is when I am trying a new powder. After I am sure I like it I order 4-8 #'s and usually get together with a few friends and basically max out the order to save on hazmat and shipping costs.

The really unfortunate part of the components mess, for me at this time, is that the rifle powders I use, are now the ones that have been unavailable for months. *The exact ones that I use most*... what are the chances? Varget and H335. Haven't seen any for months.

I'm starting to think they are just out of production/discontinued. Guess it is time to develop all new loads with available powder when my stash runs out.

$42 bucks, to 'support' a local shop? That is like dating Lizzie Borden, because she's nearby.

Irrespective of the doom and gloom, the laws of supply and demand will straighten this out. We've seen primer shortages before, and some of this had to be expected with Obama, war driving up demand, and panic buying.

It'll come down in a year or so. Then, buy it cheap, and stack it deep.

I'm getting it around $18-$25 depending on the type if I buy in one pound containers. There are a few good stores locally that have kept prices in check a bit. Too many huge chain stores around that prices couldn't go up too much for the little guys if they wanted to keep their customers from driving 10-20 miles to a Cabela's or a Bass Pro let alone the Gander Mountain and other local shops around.

I just bought 2 - 1lb containers of 231 locally, cost $51.00 and change. Small pistol primers were $38.00 per 1000, this is $380.00 per 10K, holy moly!! Next time Powder Valley has 231 in stock I'm buying at least 4 #'s, maybe 8 #'s.

This is getting nuts.

Just paid $21 for a pound of H380. Things here in central Arkansas seem to be getting back to normal. Primers are pretty easy to find and powder isn't that bad either. Just before things started getting better though, I saw a guy trying to get twelve bucks per hundred on large rifle primers at a show. Almost told him where to get off. The press will stay on the shelf and collect dust before I'll drop twelve bucks on primers or forty a pound for powder.

Went in Evan's Gun Shop on Southland Drive here in Lexington today. He had Varget, IMR-4064, and IMR-3031 for $28.00 a pound. He also has a lot of Hodgdon powders for around $23.00 a pound. I thought that was a little steep so I passed. I had enough powder on hand before the Obomination of America that I'm still using my stash. I have plenty of primers too. What is really hard to find around here is .308 bullets. I haven't seen any 168gr SMK's in months. Time to call Graf & Sons.

Cost of Powder

Got some Reloder15 onlins from Lock, Stock and Barrell, 5 weeks ago for $20.00 per lb. (I think, I'm still looking for invoice), but pretty sure that's what it was. A local shop around here has the same powder for $34.95 pefr lb. I had to pay a $20.00 Hazmat fee for shipping but I also ordered a bunch of primers and other stuff so that was not too bad.

$16-$24 per pound here in Springfield, MO. The poweders that I use are at the high end. :)

Primers are around $32/K
