I'm trying some jacketed bullets in my 1911. Do you need to lube the case mouth on pistol cases like you do with bottleneck rifle cases when shooting jacketed bullets? I thought the lube in rifle cases was mainly for sizing, but I noticed the jacketed bullets take more effort to seat than cast lead.

It's funny how when you try something new you go back to being a total beginner again.

You're not flaring the mouth enough if jacketed are noticably harder to seat. But no you don't lube the case mouth to seat the bullet.

Find and buy a Lyman M-step flare die set. The die comes with interchangeable expander buttons in about 5 pistol calibers and will allow perfect flaring with no possibility of overflaring. Cases will last forever. And if you're feeling a fair of amount of resistance as the bullet seats you will not require very much crimp (taper crimp on the .45 ACP) and will probably never experience bullet setback or pull. Tight is good.

I load 45s on a Dillon 550 - both lead and jacketed. Hornady One Shot is a spray case lube that greatly reduces the effort to size, expand and seat bullets. I put 100 cases in a cardboard box - a quick spray - tumble the box - another quick spray, tumble and load 'em.

I had a heck of a time with new unfired cases sticking on the expander die - Hornady One Shot and they're slick as _fill in the blank___

Just as a side note.
Rifle case necks are not lubed to seat the bullets.

The reason you lube rifle case necks inside before sizing is so the expander butten can be pulled back through easily without squeeking, or chattering, or stretching the shoulder forward.
