I am buying an AR-50 on Lay-a-Way and looking to get some ammo for it. The 50BMGSupply.com differentiates between 50 Cal ammo for single shot rifles and ammo for magazine-fed rifles. This is the only place I have seen this differentiation in for-sale ads. If I buy linked rounds which are clearly for a BMG, would it work in my bolt-action? Can someone steer me away from ammo which might not work in an AR-50, and therefore save me $$$.

Thanks.

They have probably loaded the single-shot-only stuff a bit longer than most magazines will fit. Any surplus ammo should work in an AR-50, just do the standard surplus ammo due diligence and make sure it's not crap before you buy it.

Your AR-50 will shoot any surplus ammo and match stuff, like Ian said, mag fed rifles have to keep the ammo set at a certain OAL or it won't fit into the mag.

Look at this picture.

The yellow tipped round in the picture is one to be avoided, it's Dominican Rep. and considered one of the worst types of ammo to shoot in any .50. The second round from the left is a SLAP round, if you ever plan on shooting one of these, take of your muzzle brake off or you could ruin it do to the sabot hitting it at 3,000 FPS when it exits the barrel. Pretty much every other round in the pic "could" be shot out of a .50 but the ones on the right (SSB-Salvo Squeeze Bore) are more of a "why would you" as they're more for collecting then shooting.
