After doing all the research I can online, here's my thinking... 55 grain bullets are wildly popular in the .223, 22-250, and other .224 rifles for coyote and other varmint hunting. It seems like most people do not see a need for anything bigger or heavier, especially if you want to avoid bomb craters in the fir. Since I am re-barreling a .204 Ruger, I think going to a 1:8 twist to shoot the 55 grain bullets would make one heck of a coyote gun that would allow it to compete with some of its .224 big brothers, with a pretty significant advantage in BC. My question, though, is about the possibilities in velocity. I've seen a pretty wide range in velocity claims, some people loading these .204 Ruger 55's up to 3800 FPS. I have a hard time believing that... Some people have improved this case, which I would consider even though I know there is really not much to be gained by doing that to the .204 Ruger. I've read all the comments on other forums from optimists, downers, and in-betweeners, so I guess if anyone out there has done this, what is the safe max velocity you have found with this combination?

For what is worth.
Don't own one or load for one but a quick look at Hodgdons data shows around 3300fps with a 50gr bullet
VVs data shows 50s around 3200.
I can't see any way to get from there to 3800.
3800 with lighter bullets yes, buts 50s, I just don't see it happening.

Heck the powder makers web sites and you can see what they show without buying a manual. (I would suggest buying a couple however)
Some bullet makers have on line load data available as well.
