MIKA Turnaround time?

Well, after creeping around here for a goodly while I am finally a proud 642 owner. It's a wonderful little gun that I look forward to getting familiar with and carrying regularly. After hearing all the praise for Mika's pocket holsters I ordered one today, at one hell of a good price, I might add. I was wondering, what sort of turn around time I should expect on this holster? Am I correct is assuming these are individually, hand-made-to-order holsters? I can't wait to get it, but I'd just like to know how long of a wait I'm in for. Thank goodness it's still cold so I can carry my GLOCK without any problems, but in a few months I know I'll be swearing by that rig. Thanks guys.

I'm working on 5 weeks since I ordered my Mika holster. As soon as I placed the order, Mr. Mika sent me an email saying that due to busy sales, it would take 4 to 6 weeks before I received the holster. I've previously ordered two others from him. Can't remember how long those took, but that was several years ago. They are nice holsters, and work very well. They are not pretty, but if what you want is a utilitarian pocket holster that does its job, you won't be disappointed in the Mika holster. Even some of the gun rag writers have mentioned his holsters.

Welcome

led4-
4-6 weeks sounds about right. In the interim you might want to pick up a DeSantis Nemesis for about the same price.
Getcha by and nice in their own right.

Wayne11 Here is some info: Maxfire thread

led4thehed2 - Welcome back, glad to see you decided to go with the X42, you did good. Six weeks wait for the Mika seems about right, it's worth the wait, add two more to break it in and you will never look back. Ditto DA's comment on the Nemesis.

Rat Finkenstein
- Howdy right back to you, good to hear from ya.

Nem, I couldn't see pics either!

Sorry you folks are having trouble accessing that image.

Not sure what's going on. Anyway, I put it up on Photobucket, and corrected the link on the original post on p. 52.
(Sorry for a bit of OT, but the main point was about the importance of counting ounces, as in airweight revolvers.)

Such a magnificent piece of North America, far from civilization (3 days in by foot),
but I wouldn't travel even there now without my x42 or some .357 mag version of it.
(No, it's not a national park; it's USFS wilderness and weapons carry is still legal there.)
The next camp after that one was at the base of that behemoth (The Guardian of the Grenadier Range.)
What a massive piece of rock. The red line in this image (mine) marks a rock that's the size of a small suburban home.

I so agree, my friend.

And one soberly wonders,
for how long ... ?
__________

Added by edit (and potentially OT :uhoh:),
even though it DOES relate to carry:
"National Park" denotes one of those flagship pieces of topography,
like Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Yosemite ...,
that astounded our ancestors, and has been "preserved"
where "preserved" means you can drive through it,
and even stay in a four star hotel in it (both of which means "packed with people,
so if you're looking for true wilderness and solitude, don't go there"), but cannot carry in it.

"USFS Wilderness" designates lands that are not quite as spectacular,
but roadless, much of it extreme, no hotels, far fewer people, with solitude and open carry.

Then, there's also BLM (also US Dept of Interior) outback,
mostly low altitude deserts, juniper woodland canyons and desert grasslands.
More than half of Nevada is BLM lands, meaning that more than half of NV isn't really NV.
Lots of BLM in eastern OR and UT as well.

Trust me, BLM land in desert - the American outback - is a fine place
to carry an x42 as a backup piece for something larger.

(Something larger? Couldn't help but notice this is my post 686-1. :D)

BLM Land West....

Not a place for the feint of heart or the not well armed.
Bill Pogue was a friend of mine.

This is a great read and illustrates the "lawlessness" that was (is?) prevalent most folks have no idea.

I personally was on private land in Idaho prior to Bill's murder and was "drawn down on" and shot over for the first time in my life. This life changing event could have turned into a huge gunfight between 5 armed men....all with 12 ga shotguns at close range.

This just drives home Nem's points.

POGUE-x.jpg
WILLIAM H. POGUE - Killed - January 5, 1981
Age: 51 years old
Marital Status: Married
Dependents: 4 children
Service: 16 Years
Died on duty from gunshot wounds while contacting a trapper, Claude Dallas, for alleged illegal hunting and trapping activity. Pogue and his partner Conley Elms were about to arrest Dallas for several Fish & Game violations when the shooting occurred.

http://www.fwoa.org/views.html

In the winter of 1980 Dallas had set up his trapping camp in Bull Basin, Idaho, three miles from the Nevada border using a "home" address in nearby Paradise Hill, Nevada. The Bureau of Land Management had leased Bull Basin to the Carlin's 45 Ranch as wintering ground for their cattle. To set up his winter trapping camp, "Dallas had moved the 45 ranch cattle out of their leased ground and shut the gates thus denying the 45's cattle access to water.

In the time frame of four to six seconds Claude Dallas put two bullets in Pogue and two in Elms with a .357 Ruger Service Six. Elms, not having time to get his weapon, had dropped the hides and ducked when Dallas shot him." When both officers were down and helpless, Claude Dallas walked into his tent, picked up a .22 Marlin, returned and shot both officers in the head behind the ear execution style. This is also the method a trapper uses to kill their quarry.

Model 60LS

My wife and I were trying out several handguns a few weeks ago as outlined in post# 1093 http://thehighroad.org/showpost.php?p=4155664&postcount=1093

I was visiting my local Pawn Shop/FFL Transfer dude today at lunch and they happen to have a Model 60 Lady Smith. It still has the original wood grips and it looks to be in good condition. The exterior appears flawless but I can tell it has been shot some and not cleaned as thoroughly as I clean my 642.

He said he'd let it go for $400.00. My gut tells me that is a pretty good deal. My wife doesn't currently have a CHL so this would be a house gun for now and a car gun for traveling. It would probably get a set of CT305s as well.

What say the 642 Club intelligentsia? :)

Thanks!!!

Indy - We are so spoiled by the X42's. I like everything except the weight:

Price: $727.00
SKU: 162414
Model: 60LS
Caliber: .357MAG/.38+P
Capacity: 5 Rounds
Barrel Length: 2 1/8"
Front Sight: Black Blade Front
Rear Sight: Fixed
Grip: Wood Grips
Frame: Small - Chiefs Special Style
Finish: Matte
Overall Length: 6 5/8"
Material: Stainless Steel
Weight Empty: 21.5 oz.

jt1,

I agree with you on the weight, especially for concealed carry but I'm thinking that the weight would help make the Model 60 easier for her to shoot and tame the recoil more. Since it would mainly be a house/car gun the weight isn't as big of an issue. I really need to get her out shooting one so we can see if she can handle it with the nerve damage she suffers with in her arm.

If she could handle the weight of my 6" - 686 she wouldn't have any recoil issues at all :) It is a mid 80s model and it is a sweet shooter.

For the over the shoulder holster how about a Wilderness Safepacker? As seen here. Just add the $10 shoulder strap.

And for a frikken lazer beam why not a Lasermax? As seen here. Gets it high and out of the way of your fingers.

I have a CT for my Sig P220 and i like it so I'm not knocking CT just wondering if there was any interest in the LM product.

IMO, any ... 65 ... would make
an excellent companion for an x42.

Well, while waiting on the State of Texas to finish processing my CHL license, I sent some $$ to Midway USA last night picking up a lot of the standard equipment for the 642:

Bianchi Speed strips
DeSantis Nemesis (while waiting for my Mika round-cut ordered last week)
Several boxes of Speer Gold Dot 135gr +p 38 Special loads
A couple of things related to my evil polymer bottomfeeding XD40:evil:

I think I'll take the afternoon off and head to the range to burn through a lot of FMJ practice rounds for both handguns, and get in a good cleaning in.

I've dryfired the heck out of the 642-2 and have run about 250 rounds through it. The trigger is much better now than when new.

Regards

I've been reading this thread for awhile, and I pick up my 642 next week. I decided to order a Mika round pocket holster. Mr. Mika emailed me back and confirmed my order, what a nice guy! Im looking forward to both the 642 and the Mika!

Well, I ran 100 rounds of WWB practice ammo (non +p) downrange yesterday and was very pleased with the results. When actually taking the time to aim, I was getting 2" vertical string groups at 12 feet. That's good with this little snubby. Instinctive point shooting opened up to about 4" groups, but I'll still take that at 12 feet.

My evil polymer bottomfeeding 4" XD40 was much more accurate on the aimed shots, but then I expect it to be. Oddly enough, I point shoot the 642 more accurately at closer ranges. That means a lot for my confidence since I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn when I first started shooting the 642.

250 rounds total, a big smile on the face, and got my early voting in here in Texas. Life is good.
