I learned last weekend that my 1889 schmidt rubin (1893) works very very well on deer. Worked up some loads this fall and got the first one 90yds stopped in its tracks. It is truly amazing that a well kept 100 year plus rifle is as accurate as the Schmidt. Thank you Swiss for delivering me my 80 pounds off venision summer sausage. :)

I reload and make up my own loads. Using norma brass, a little IMR 4895 and some 180 gr RNs. She is a dream moa at 100, 2.5 at 200 with 5 shot groups. Considering the massive throat i thnk she works just fine.

Whose 180 did you use? What MV are you getting? What was your starting powder weight?

Have any pics of the gun or the deer?

Bill

One of my best friends just took two deer in Pennsylvania last month with his K-31, and he couldn't be happier. He was using Wolf Gold Line JSP.

I used sierra RNs and started with some conservitive 30-40 Krag loads (33gr). I do not have a chrono but im guessing im around 2400 mv. My Schmidt was bubbafied before i purchased it but was done tastfully. I almost never take pictures of Does unless they are large and this one was only 2 years so i did not snap a shot of her but our 4 day doe season is coming and hopefully i plink a fat one......

Well, according to the Hornady 5th Edition load manual, the 7.5Swiss is a .308" diameter bullet on a case only 4mm longer than a .308Winchester. 2400fps is right at top end for .30-30Win. (w/ 150gr JSP in a levergun) and it's also approximately the same as .303British (Mk7 and Mk8 ball). It'll do the job.

Deer killing K31s

I killed a doe last year with my K31 and GP11. Headshot at about 100 yards. Hope the rifle comes up while I am rotating through the gunsafe again this year.

Used the same rifle to win the TSRA Vintage Military Rifle Championship this year at Temple, Texas.

Mustanger; thing is, the 1889 doesn't use the modern 7.5x55(GP11) load

Right. I'd forgotten about that. However, when I made my comparisons about speed and bullet weight, .30-30 and .303British aren't modern GP11 either. If that .30caliber 180grain bullet is running 2400fps as the OP guesses, it's on a par with .30-30, .303Brit., and probably several other comparable cartridges in terms of killing power on deer.

I also noticed several others heard "Swiss" and started thinking "K31/GP11" too.

Either way, I figure if the shooter is steady enough, the rifles and ammos are more than mechanically capable.

Friend of mine let me shoot his K31 a while back.

That is one sweet rifle, and as for the scope mount, it's really not a total abomination.

Does the 7.5 Swiss use .308 dia bullets?

FWIW, the 7.5x55 apparently works wonders on Elk too, as I just read an post (with pics) on the surplusrifle forums that showed a guy that lives here in CO with his K31 and dead elk. He reports that the elk dropped at the second shot, although he apparently muffed his first shot, which is his fault, not the rifles.

Here she is no mocking

I've seen much worse bubba jobs on the old SR's. In fact I almost never see an old vintage SR that hasn't been hacked up badly. That one at least has a nice continental style sporter stock. Not bad at all.

I have not shot any critters with my K31. In so far as power, the round is quite good. The service loads are right there with the 308. I had a chance to shoot a few of a friends GP-11 rounds over my chronograph, and used the knowledge gained to develop loads. I found that with a 168 Nosler Match bullet, in 308, that a charge weight between 51.0 grs , and 52.0 grs of AA4350 would be a close equivalent.

I think 51.0 grs would be the load I would use with if I were not using my surplus WC852 in the case. For some reason, WC852 shoots extremely well in this case. Accurate Arms sells a version of WC852 as “2700”. When they first sold it, it was surplus WC852. These lots differ and my lot of WC852 is slower than 2700, so I am not going to put out my load data.

Indep ammunition was so weak that I pulled the bullet and powder and used the primed case for my load development. I was very disappointed with Indep. Though the brass is OK.

The K31 is a stronger action than the 1889 or 1911.

There is excellent data on Swiss Ammunition on Swissrifles.com.
