An act of desperation?

I guess I'm lucky in that my local Walmart Supercenter is less than 10 minutes away, and for whatever reason it might be, seems to always have lots of ammo on hand, or if a bit low on a particular brand or caliber, they seem to get it in within a couple of days. I pick up ammo about every time I'm in there for one or more of the calibers I own, they even started carrying the 100 round bulk pack of Federal in 9mm for just under $20, just a few cents over the price of two boxes of the Tulammo. Always plenty of 9mm and 7.62x39 on hand, I buy my .22 elsewhere and haven't bought much .40 since I switched EDC pistols to 9mm.

The Wallie Worlds near me dont stock guns, or have a big sporting goods section for that matter, but they have LOTS and I mean LOTS of ammo.

Fortunately, I have access to Cabela's and Bass Pro because the Walmart in Lawrence, ks is extremely limited on ammo. I NEVER buy anything there. They no longer sell firearms; haven't for years. They seem to be steadily moving further and further away from stocking anything that appeals to hunters and shooters. Does anyone know why? Is it a PC thing? The Cabela's in KC, just 30 minutes away, is packed all the time. Seems to me that Walmart is missing the boat.

I know someone who buys 2 boxes of ammo every time he goes into town. One to practice with, one to store away for harder times. He NEVER touches the ones he has put away, showed me a box he has had since the 80's. Good plan.

After bHo got elected, I bought $3,500 worth of ammo over the next year. I'm still shooting that off. I bought a reloading rig just to re-use the brass.

now there's something i'd love to see a picture of!

I don't buy guns or ammo from the Wal-Mart Super Center even though it is exactly 3 miles from my house. I look every so often though at their inventory and check ammo prices. Last Monday they were out of all 7.62x39 except for 2 boxs of fmj, very little 9mm and only a few boxes of .223 of any description.

$3,500 don't get you that much these days.

I don't know exactly, but I suspect it would cost me upwards of $25k to replace this:

I'm in Va. I haven't seen any shortages at my local Walmarts and if they do happen to be out of WWB there is Federal. There may be one manufacturer that they are out of in a certain caliber but there's always some other brand available.

Think I would be lookin around for any possible venue for ammo then, rather then relying on Wally World. I reload for most of what I have, 12 calibers and that helps a lot. Did stock up on 9mm though, have a stash of 2000 rounds at the moment. A couple boxes as you see them really adds up, even at normal retail price. Better to have then to wish you had!

re MackIV i can certainly appreciate organization.

im loading 29 calibers now and as i have shootable stock of all my calibers
i only have +1K of the commen pistol and 3-500 of rifle. the uncommen calibers ( 32 colt Long, 32 x 38 , 7.5 x 53 to name a few) will have 100 or so. just so i can take any gun on a whim and have some fun.
i do inventory by counting primers ( powder & bullets are bought to match) and try to keep stock for 3 years worth of shooting. thus i can, hopefully, buy when there are sales rather than out of need at any price.

Mack, when you put a value on what it would cost to replace.....did you figure your time in at any rate also? when teaching re-loading i say that anything is better than watching tv but time is yours to spend. even at minimum wage, to make a box of pistol on a progressive, labor adds about $3/box and for rifle adds $6/50.
of course costs vary with equipment and experience.

My time? Oh, jeez.........lol. Hundreds of hours. lol. No, it's not factored.

Some of that is pretty spendy stuff, with labor-intensive loading practices. There's about 500 .17 Rem., 400 .220 Swift, 100 .375 RUM, 100 8mm Mag, 250 .50 BMG.......

I was just at Walmart today.
The closest one to me is like 50 miles away because I live in the sticks.
They didn't have even one single caliber I shoot.
BUT.......for the first time ever (for me)....."My" Walmart had a DPMS and a Bushmaster M4-forgery sitting behind the glass with the bolt rifles and shotguns. It REALLY caught me by surprise!
And a "nice" surprise at that....
:D

I always order my ammo on-line anyways though.
I was actually there for sheets and bath towels and boring stuff.

DANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And here I thought I was doin' OK with a handful of old ammo cans?
You've got me beat every which way from Sunday!

I gotta add some 357 MAG cans in there now though too.
Collecting ammo can get addicting....as I see "YOU" have already discovered.:D

This is what happens when you have a cartridge accumulation addiction. lol. The consolidation thing is not for me, as witnessed by the stocking of 51 different metallic cartridges and 4 shotgun gauges.

If that's what your ammo storage looks like...I can't even imagine what your firearms collection must be like.....
:what:

Are those ammo cans filled?

I like to have enough for a range trip or two on hand. Don't feel the need to stockpile or hoard it for doomsday.

Neither do I, yet the last time I checked my ammo stash I was surprised I found about 1,600 rounds of assorted 38 special and .357 Magnum ammo. When I started shooting, years and years, ago finding ammo was a non-issue, just stopped on the way to the range and picked up whatever you needed.

So my question is when does having a reasonable amount of ammo on hand cross into hording or a dooms day mentality? Is it having more ammo than you would normally shoot in say 6 month hoarding, or not being able to buy other things you want or need because you spent money on ammo become hoarding?

Thanks all
