Any advantage to a Rem 700 VLS laminated stock over a synthetic stock?

I'm kind of interested in a stainless .308 heavy barrel 700. I have an opportunity to buy a special edition 700 VLS-SS (not a Remington cataloged item) in a brown laminated stock. There is not a stainless .308 heavy barrel 700 on Remington's web site with a synthetic stock.

The stock is not bedded, so I don't know if it would be as accurate as a 700PSS.

Any ideas?

yeah, that rifle was a special run made by rem for one of their larger distributors. it is a great gun.

no, the stock won't be bedded. so bed it yourself. it is easy, cheap, and you won't have to worry about the pss...

the remington laminated stock is a very stable platform. in fact, i would take it over just about any factory composite stock coming down the pike these days. also, the inletting remington has done on the vls-style stocks is very good... so good in fact, that you may not want to bed the gun.

If you live in a cold region the laminated might be a bit easier on your face than the composite. I've found that the stock on my LTR can be rather "refreshing" when it's been outside in freezing conditions.
Wood stocks seem to hold the warmth a bit longer.

ahh, yes... the warmth of wood... so few people think about it, but it is serious. wood is warmer than the synthetics. don't know that they retain heat any better or not, but do know they sure warm up fast in your hand, and a synthetic never does get warm.

the problem i've had w/ synthetics was not my face, but freezing my fingers even worse than they were.

These were all over Gunbroker and AA a while back. They also made a stainless model with a grey laminated stock that was simply baaad. What are they asking for the rifle??

What do you mean it was bad? Are the stock proportions bad or is it a poor design?

I actually meant they are bad ???. With the stainless on the grey they are just beautiful guns. I have a 700 VS/synthetic that is blued and I have been looking for a take-off wood VLS stock. No luck to this point. There was a recent article in one of the gun rags recently about the 700 VLS and shooting at 1000 yards, basically it had no problems out of the box shooting MOA with factory premium ammo. They also commented that the fit was so good no bedding was required.

Steve, I have the blued VLS in 308. I left it stock, and it shoots sub-min groups with about half of the handloads Ive tried, so far. So far Ive been using 168 SMK`s, but Im going to try 175 SMKs. Buy it, You`ll love it!!
