Guy is going to buy a rifle and a boat load of ammo from me, and he lives in Ill. I know they have alot of bad laws there; is there anything, as the seller, that I should be concerned with?

Make sure he has his FOID:

Who needs a FOID card?
Unless specifically exempted by statute, any Illinois resident who acquires or possesses firearm or firearm ammunition within the State must have in their possession a valid Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card issued in his or her name.
(from http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/firearmsfaq.cfm)

Make sure you have a photocopy of their valid FOID on hand just to protect yourself. **There might be more rules regarding the actual firearm transfer**, but the FOID is big deal for anyone in IL to get ammo.

Is it really just to cover my butt, or is there an actual legal precedence? I'm just trying to do the right thing.

It's called statute. State law:

65/3. Requisites for transfer.
(a) Except as provided in Section 3a, no person
may knowingly transfer, or cause to be
transferred, any firearm, firearm ammunition,
stun gun, or taser to any person within this State
unless the transferee with whom he deals
displays a currently valid Firearm Owner's
Identification Card which has previously been
issued in his name by the Department of State
Police under the provisions of this Act. In
addition, all firearm, stun gun, and taser
transfers by federally licensed firearm dealers
are subject to Section 3.1.

Make sure he has a FOID card and send the ammo, of course he will get the rifle from an FFL.
