454c: The ATF can make an appointment with you to check your book once per every 12 months. They cannot inspect your book without an appointment (unless have a warrent, but thats a different issue), and as Hkmp5sd said, you can choose the place the inspection occurs.
The very best part of having a C & R FFL is that you can get dealer prices from Brownells. Just call and tell them that you have the FFL. In my case, I have saved the cost of the FFL many times over with my Brownells purchases.
Now when it comes to your log book for purchases, are there any requirements as to what kind of book to use and is there any information that you need to list other than make model and SN?
The format required is explained in one of the books the ATF will send you when you get your license. I suggest just searching Brownells for "bound book" and buying theirs for $3. It has space for ~400 entries, so you dont need to worry about running out of space, and it comes with examples so you know how to do it correctly.
Your bound book doesn't actually have to be "bound". You can take the format (it is shown in 178.125(f) in the Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide) and create a form on your computer and print it out.
That's what I do. Created an Excel Spreadsheet in the proper format, printed out the form, punched holes in them and placed it in a 3-ring binder.
