I'm looking to replace the ebony Ahrends grips on my duty pistol because the wood panels just aren't taking the abuse well. They look great and are well-made, but I need something more durable.

I was/am considering the Simonich grips, and I still might buy a set to support Christine, but I was wondering about these grips. I've not heard any mention of them, except on Pistolsmith.com.

Anyone use them? Like them? They do look different from anything else on the market (a big plus with me), but how does micarta compare to g10? I'd be using the paper micarta so I get a deep black color, though the canvas micarta is supposedly stronger.

The only thing I don't like about the Simonich grips is that they look like a golf ball. Maybe it's my vanity, but I just can't get in to the visual that they present. Is that wrong?

Sadly, I can only assume from the lack of response that these Gator Back grips are not the cat's meow like I had hoped.

The Gunner Grips from Simonich LLC are very ugly, but their reputation for servicability makes up for what they lack in appearance. Maybe I can fill in some of the divots with epoxy and create a sort-of double diamond look?

The really big problem with dealing with the Simonich family is that I will probably not be able to get away from their website without purchasing a knife or two. :banghead:

Thanks for the help, guys!

FYI, folks.

Just got an email from John VanZyck. I was bouncing back and forth on the issue because I can't decide what color will best go with my stainless lady (sounding an awful lot like a woman trying to figure out what to wear :hrm: ).

Get this, John has offered to send me three pairs of grips for evaluation: one green, one blasted black, and the other straight black canvas! Is that not a great guy?! I didn't ask for any special favors or request anything other than his thoughts on dyeing the canvas for a darker look. Apparently, he won't be satisfied with anything but a happy customer.

He earned my business.

I'm normally not a fan of synthetic grips, but those look nice. Being Micarta, they should be durable enough. I wish he made grips for my Star, I'd buy a pair right now (I don't have a 1911).
