Hey everyone I am thinking about putting together an AR-15.
The concept I am thinkin of is fairly simple. I like the 16 inch barrel of the carbine but the full length sight radius of the A2. So I think a Dissapator Upper is perfect. I also prefer the collapsable stock of the M4. I don't like the standard A2 pistol grip because of the finger bump so im thinking of retrofitting it with an old M16A1 pistol grip.
as far as the upper goes I don't see the need or use for a bayonet lug but id like to have the threaded barrel for a flash supressor. Im not sure If I am going to go with a flat top upper or not. I do like chrome lined barrels though.
If I do this what should I do for a lower reciever?

Any idea how much this might cost?
Thanks

"Dissy" style uppers are made by several companies, DPMS, Bushmaster, Model1, M&A, etc. Depending on the company, some use chrome lined barrels, some don't. I have a M&A "dissy" style upper with chrome lined barrel, it runs like a champ. Also, some differences are where the gas block is. Some use a carbine gas system with an inert FSB, others use a rifle length gas system. Not sure it matters a ton, if the upper is built right.

Most will come with a FH installed on a threaded muzzle, bayo lugs are common now as the ban is dead.

I'd definately go flat top, then your options are open.

As far as lowers go, that's the least important thing in the build, AFAIK. As long as its in spec, all it does is hold the FCG together. Stag makes a great lower for cheap, AMEETEC, Mega, Eagle Arms, all fine lowers for not much dough.

As far as cost, expect to spend around $700-$750 for all the parts + lower, in the configuration you're looking at (chrome lined 16", with full length handguards). Try scoring the parts in the EE section of AR15.com, good deals abound there.

The Dissy style is a great package, btw. Very handy and versatile.

Still haven't got this ideas to come to fruition yet but here is what I am thinking.

M16A1 or M16A2 upper receiver (though I prefer the lighter weight barrel of the A1) shorten the barrel to slightly over 16" and thread the muzzle so the flash hider almost touches the front sight, remove bayonet lug because it is no longer needed with the shorter barrel. Add M16A1 pistol grip and either CAR-15 or M4 stock.

Nothing fancy but I am thinking its about like what I would want in an AR. Reminds me alot of the Colt model 605 but with a collapsable stock.

Another possibility is an M16A1 or M16A1 upper with CAR-15 or M4 stock on it and A1 pistol grip I guess I have pretty simple taste.

I have owned my Bushmaster Dissapater carbine for about fifteen years now.
It came with a fixed A2 sight carry handle upper and an early four position M4type collapsing stock.

Long ago I replaced the collapser stock with a fixed A2 style stock because during the ban collapser stocks were hard to come by and a guy was willing to pay me a good chunk of change for that stock so I sold it.

I like the fixed stock better than the original collapser stock on this rifle and have long arms so the A2 stock length works well for me.

The barrel is legal 16" and stands clear of the front sight base by about 1/2", you can't get the flash hider flush against the FSB and keep it 16 legal without cutting back and permanently installing a flash suppressor long enough to make the barrel/flashider combination over the 16" legal limit.
I use a Yankee Hill Phantom flash suppressor on this rifle and this adds a little over 2" to the 16" barrel so the idea you have could be done it just wouldn't be cost effective when the gunsmithing costs are added in.

While my rifle has the A2 rear sight set-up, I consider the rifle a 400 meter maximum rifle and think the fixed A1 rear sight upper would be quite suitable to this type of configuration.

As for a bayonet lug,,,,,mine has one, it serves absolutely no useful purpose because there isn't enough barrel in front of the front sight base to allow any accessories to be mounted to it.
The only thing it does is give a cool factor appearance that I could do without.

I should add that the Bushmaster Dissapater uses a carbine length gas system that locates under the handguards.
The front sight base is a second that does not act as a gas block, it is just there to increase the handguard length and act as a front sight.
