Ok, here is a question for you pros. I have a choice between three AR uppers. They are all 16" A4 config with chrome lined barrels and fixed front sights. Which one is better?
Armalite
DPMS
RRA
The funny thing is they are all the same price. Which one is the best? Need help!

Depends. If you are going to shoot 5.56mm ammo and not .223 you may have problems because not all manufacturers use a 5.56 chamber. DPMS and Armalite sell "match" chambers which often won't function well when shooting 5.56. So which one depends on which ammo you intend to shoot.

Jeff

All are chambered for 223. I handload for all my guns. I don't like shooting milsurp ammo. I am also going to throw a scope on it. Any ideas?

Any one of them will work fine. If you see any difference in the three, it's imaginary. Armalite is the only one I don't have personal experience with, but guys that shoot them seem to like them ok.

Armalite does not have any for 345. I called and they are out with no rain checks or back orders. The ones they had did not have a bolt. I have found an armalite for less then 400, a RRA for 415, and a DPMS for 425. I only have a day to make the decision. Will the Armalite ok on my DPMS lower? I was planning on building a complete DPMS, but it is hard to turn down the deal on the Armalite. I was told, but not sure that armalite has an improved upper over the rest but not sure what they are talking about. Thanks for the excellent advice....

Armalite's .223 chamber is actually a Wylde-like chamber these days IIRC.

A friend of mine has an Armalite and his rifle is top notch. I can't say whether that rifle is typical of their entire product line; but it is typical of the few other Armalite's I've been able to play with. It has been perfectly reliable and it has great accuracy (including with 75gr ammo despite the 1/9 twist).

Seriously though, I would be happy with any of those. I'd be more concerned with the person I was buying from at that point. Which dealer do you trust most?

I haven't owned an Armalite, but I can say that I just

got one of the 24" bull DPMSs from Midwest for 419.00 and it is a tack driver, came with a full bolt and handle. They do have some in the 16" versions also for reasonable prices. I think the quality of the DPMS is almost up near the RRAs now since they have a big volume surge, and supply a lot of the AR makers with their machined parts.

I really like the RRA & the Armalite and the DPMS would come in 3rd -- but this is after splitting hairs in order come up w/ this order. I have shot all 3, found all 3 to be top notch products and would be happy w/ any of the 3 ;) Maybe pick the on that "feels" better to you?? Or the one that best matches the finish of your lower?
Good luck

Thanks for the information. As far as the finish goes, it is becoming my Yote gun and will get a nice duracoat finish after it is all put together and optested. Optics are another story and I have several options I am looking at. I intend to keep this a below 300yrd gun. I have a 308 I shoot longer range, but it is way to heavy for the brush...

I went and got the armalite. I just had a hard time beating the price. I decided that I wanted a lighter barrel since it appears that everytime I go Yote hunting I end up kicking them out of the brush at 15-25 yards. Now for the optics.... Must be good to 300 yards on a 8 inch target...

You did well. Armalite makes some nice stuff, of course so do the other two. Though you do tend to hear more bad reviews of DPMS stuff than you do Armalite or RRA. Really, nearly all AR makers and builders have very good quality. I would stay away from anything that has Hesse or Vulcan on it and some people swear like a sailor at the mention of Olympic Arms.

For general use

Armalite.

If you will just be paper punching, DPMS. My DPMS 16" heavy bbl upper is the most accurate 16" upper that I have fired. DPMS is a great rifle if you are shooting .223 and not going to run them hard. I think that they put a little more effort into accuracy concerns and less on hard core use. For their intended purpose, I think that DPMS is a good value.

longhorngunman: I take offense to that statement. I have been a sailor for the last 19 years and I don't swear!! ;)

Yea...right...lol

RC,
given you intended use have you concerned a longer barrel?
You can get a 20" HB for a comparable price and quality and be ahead of the game re: accuracy.

Rock River Arms, I have 2 AR's that are all RRA except for the stripped lowers they started with, (both lowers are CMMG).

NEVER a single problem, NEVER... RRA is better than Colt in my humble opinion... I'd take my RRA Entry Tactical over my issued M4, and I've trusted my M4 through some serious situations!
