when i look at both my grandfathers collections, I see SxS's and sigle shooters and one over/under that he bought later in life, then i compare that to my fathers and I's collections and I see Semi-autos, and over/unders? Just wondering what you thought?

on the next note I would like have an good SxS in the range of less than,$1200. fixed choke, and a rarer guage, like 16 or 28. what would you recomend, The longer i wait the more i can save if i dont break down and get a new Flat pannel HDTV....

I actually think the sxs has made somewhat of a return, especially with the cowboy shooters. There was a time through the '70s and '80s that you couldn't find a new sxs in any new gun catalog. You can now.

Quality SxS have been missing for many years over here, unless you have £45,000.00 plus, and don't mind a 2 years or so wait..
The midrange say £2000 to £11000 guns are still out there, like AYA in the various grades.
The cheap spanish ones are still available, just not very nice.
The Beretta Silver Hawk at around £2000 is the best that most can hope for, me I'm still saving, not geting any closer though :(

Neil.

Most new shooters cant appreciate a SXS , mostly because they never shot one and have been weened on todays O/U's, pumps. or auto's. Not their fault!

The SXS today has become a high priced specialy item, because of trending.

Your desire to own a SXS with fixed chokes at a reasonable price can be easily accomplished provided you dont want fancy. Their are many used SxS's like the Stevens 311 (among others) out there that have been shooting well for 50 years and still going strong, most of which can be had for $500. or less. (keep in mind most of these guns sold for around $50.bucks or less new).
Even still they are dependable and rugged guns.

SxS

The SxS is on the upswing again and although the majority are a bit above your budgeted amount the quality and balance is excellent. The new SxSs are no more than the current O/Us. Just last year a friend brought a nice older Spanish SxS to the range. I'd never fired a SxS so I decided to give it a try. It fit so well that I shot a couple of rounds with it and did very well. If I were looking for a new SxS I'd check out all the major players offerings and shoot as many as you can before making a choice.

No they definitely are not becoming extinct.

The older ones are in demand and there are alot of new ones on the market. Several new manufacturers.

I think the only threat is that the English, Spanish, Italian and other manufacturers that make the top end guns are skyrocketing in price.

So true, but what manufacturer of any type gun has been holding the line on prices recently? It seems that all gun prices are skyrocketing.

If you're on a budget.......

.......like myself, check out the Remington Spartans. Nothing fancy but quite solid and reliable. I have the coach gun with the hammers and would like to get a longer field gun later on. The SxS is definitely making a comeback in my opinion.

Keep your eyes open, shop hard and you might luck across one with beatiful bluing, real and gorgeous CCHing and pretty darned decent wood:

I'm a younger shooter. I would love a SxS but they seem expensive for what they are. I only have the money for one shotgun right now. I can get a nice pump for less than 300 but SxS seem to be more than but also less practical.

Yildiz just release side by sides. They are beautiful, shoot great, and are low priced. We'll have to see if they hold up as well as their O/Us.

Hey, TX1911fan, does Academy have 'em, yet? I'll have to check 'em out if so. I like the low end guns for hunting. They are generally reliable and shoot well. I have a Spartan 20 gauge and an old Sarasqueta 12 I bought back in 1971. They shoot great. I wish I could afford custom fit, but at some point when you're living on 40K a year, you gotta wonder how wise spending a year's pay for custome fit would be. There are currently choices out there, though, for other than Bill Gates. It was slim pickin's for us po folks 20 years ago.

What I like about the Spartan is that it ISN'T a work of art. It's a rugged gun to be USED. I'd like to have one of those custom tailored ornate works of art someday, I truly appreciate the beauty of a nice side by side.....working on the lotto. Nice to know, though, that in the meantime, there are choices for the less wealthy. When the Savage/Stevens 310 died, there was a lack of affordable side by sides on the market for a while. Well, they're back. :D

There are a lot of side by sides available now from $350 up. I have 4 Stoeger Uplanders: 12ga, 20ga , 28ga, .410bore. I have shot them a lot. I even shot a couple of registered skeet tournaments with them. They have served me well.
