Just got the latest issue of Shotgun News in the mail today and on the cover was an oddly familiar looking rifle. Turns out FN is using the commercial BAR action as a basis for a semi-auto tactical rifle in .308 called the FNAR. The prototypes tested came with a 10 and 20 round magazine, which slams in like an AR instead of rock and lock like an AK. I havn't read the whole article yet, but looks like an interesting rifle.

Different BAR; the commercial one is not the same as the one JMB designed. It's much slimmer, lighter, and more modern.

Could someone explain to me how this isn't redundant with the SCAR-H? No matter; the most interesting products come from companies willing to do seemingly illogical things.

For a second there, I thought you were talking about the WW2 BAR. Can you imagina a BAR chop mod. Talk about bustin down door ith a .30-06

An alternative to bolt action boredom, it has impressive barrel life and 0.5 MOA or better accuracy. Tactically it allows rapid multiple target engagement and even may develop a doctrine of the “Sniper Double Tap”.

" . . . impressive barrel life"

What?

" . . . and even may develop a doctrine of the "Sniper Double Tap"."

Which couldn't be done with the PSG-1, M25, SR-25, or even the AR-10T and LR-308. I love marketing hype. From reading this you'd think nobody ever made a precision semi-auto before.

Barrel life is a factor on magnum-class sniper rifles. It's not that the barrel "wears out", it's just that accuracy degrades. It's one of the reasons the US military has clung to the .308 as a sniping round for so long; it's easy on the guns.

Seems to me you shouldn't oughta need to shoot somebody twice with a .300 Win Mag. :scrutiny:

Now, as for why is FN offering this also? Becasue they have the rights to anything Browning makes and they can. Besides, the SCAR-H won't be on the civvie market for a good while yet. They can introduce a "tactical BAR" tomorrow. I'd rather see it in .300 Win Mag, though.

Well, the Armstech rifle in 300 WM would be able to push the plentiful and proven m2 AP projectile to a velocity that would allow it to achieve maximum penetration and (likely) defeat level IV armor with ease. I can see a certain market for that. As for the 'sniper double tap' malarky--whatever makes one happ, I guess

Hmmm -- the BAR fires from an open bolt. I assume this new version is a closed bolt model.

This is the hunter model of the BAR, not the 1918.

It's always been closed bolt and the design bears no resemblance to the military BAR. They only used that name for marketing purposes.

This BAR.....

TexasRifleman is correct. Picture to rifle in his post with a black synthetic pistol grip stock, shorter, thicker barrell and detachable box magazine and you'll have a good idea of what the FNAR looks like. It honestly doesn't look bad at all. The issue of Shotgun News featuring the FNAR should hit the newsstands in a week or two.

I could almost be sure that several months ago someone had a thread here about EBR-ing up a BAR.

Spooky huh?

I guess they are waiting for SHOT to show much, other than the one article in Shotgun News.

The little industry blurbs from FN only say:

Also new is the FNAR Tactical Rifle in .308 and the SLP Tactical Shotgun.

haha if i get sent to iraq im gonan put in an ap for my own firearm and bring over a chopper WWII BAR

break down a door with that.....hell i might never have to shoot anyone theyed just crap themselves staring down the barrel of a .30-06 on full auto

My dad has taken many deer with his .270 BAR. I've fired it a little bit too.

It is lighter than my M1A, is extremely accurate (1moa), and has never jammed even though my dad does not clean his guns.

The only bad thing is that disassembly or field stripping is not recommended and no instructions are provided.

I'm hoping I can get some 20 round mags for it.

Doesn't the BAR also come in 338 Win mag (or at least did)??? Anyway, if they come out with a 223 version, would there even be a reason to mess with mini-14's anymore??

:what:

THEY TOOK MY IDEA OFF TFL AND MADE A NEW PRODUCTION GUN!!!??:what:

El Tejon's BAR TacRifle proposal: synthetic stocked BAR in .308 with Vortex or Phantom flash suppressor, nice trigger but stout, slick the action and relocate the bolt stop for manipulations, 10 round mags, rail up front for light or grip (or grippod), thicken the barrel and tighten the twist a bit.

I was worried about durability. Don't know if a current production BAR would hold up to shooting as I do.

It's about time gun makers listen to me more. Afterall, I'm chock full of great ideas.:D

Who's got a pic? I want to see what they did with my baby.
