Before you buy a PTR-91 you need to see this

Wow, that sucks. Your fears have been confirmed as reality. I'm interested in their response. How'd it shoot before the breakage:)

To be honest, I was pleased with the way the rifle shot but I'm not sure I want it back.

I will be sure to post my experience with customer service.

I think the experience with CS would make all the difference in whether I kept the gun or not. Good service: keep it, and chalk it up as a lemon that got away (I have personally never heard of this in a PTR-91)...Poor service: drop it, and get a FAL. Good luck;

Mav.

:)

If they will refund I have a Springfield SAR 8 I will sell you. I'll be close to NM this weekend.

but I'm not sure I want it back.

I'll take it!!!!!

Seen that before...it isn't the end of the world, and you were not in any real danger, but, what if that small piece would have went in your eye...?

The PRT folks have been pretty good as for CS. Give them a chance to fix it, if they give you any grief....that definitely was a safety problem, right?

JLD/PTR-91 Inc is close to running out of surplus parts. Wonder if the bolt head you got was U.S.-made.

Either way, you should be well take care of. Their customer service is top notch.

There was a thread on another forum about the bolt heads not being HK anymore.

What range is your serial number?

Crap that's very close to my serial number. :uhoh:

On HK Pro there is a thread about the US made bolt heads. There was some speculation that TB was making the threads. Then someone said they were at the PTR factory and saw PTR making their own bolt heads.

I called PTR towards the end of 2009.

Yes, the importation of surplus roller bolts is being blocked. Probably some other parts. So PTR had to buy an expensive milling machine and make bolts. Maybe carriers too.

Most unfortunate that the bolt cracked.

I have seen pictures of bolt cracks on other types of firearms, all unfortunate.

Designers build a little margin in these things, but if the heat treatment, materials are off, things will break.

Hey, the cylinder head in my truck cracked. Replaced the cylinder head first of this year. I am now driving it. Trucks, guns, they are all mechanical items. Fix the broken part and live with it.

Sorry that happened to you. Hope they make it right.

I sent mine back for some repair, I think the ejector started riding too low in the bolt to reliably eject cases, and my bolt gap was shrinking. They removed my muzzle brake and didn't properly reaffix it, did nothing for the bolt gap, and fixed the ejection issue. Go figger.

I placed +2 rollers in the bolt and remedied the bolt gap issue myself, and eventually used red loctite on the brake to keep it in place.

I have confirmed that PTR91 is now making their own bolt heads, the Germans are no longer exporting, whether it is a ban or by design, I'm not sure.

I talked to PTR91 and got a repair authorization number for the rifle, I will be shipping it to them tomorrow. They said to allow two weeks (seems excessive) once they get it. I will continue to keep you updated on the customer service and with the results once I get it back.

one bolt failure will not prevent me from buying a rifle.
Same here, and I don't think the OP feels any differently. Probably just wanted to let us know about the issue, and find out if this was a recurring problem. I appreciate the information.

They said to allow two weeks (seems excessive) once they get it.
That's not too bad, and hopefully they will be much faster and are simply trying to give themselves additional time if there is a more serious problem.

:)

I thought long and hard on what I wanted before I bought this rifle. I'm not sorry I bought it yet. I was actually happy with it at the range til I got it home. :fire::cuss:

I'm going to get the repairs done, buy a German Bolt, install it and use the PTR Bolt for an extra when I get it back. This is not the first time I have had to send a gun back for repairs.

Sorry to hear about your problems!

I have had good luck with my PTR but mine is an older one A0xxx. I have shot brown bear and some handloads with no problems. I think you will end up liking the rifle in the long run.
