Best Gun Store Purchase Surprise?

Old beat up SKS on the used rack at the local gun shop, marked "Russian- $125". I told them it wasn't Russian but I didn't know what it was, but they adamantly insisted it darn well was Russian and I shouldn't question their expertise. I bought it without questioning their expertise any further.

Long story short, I did the research on it and it sat in the back of my safe for a couple years until a collector paid me $795 for my genuine North Vietnamese SKS.
 
Barely touched used EAA Witness (full size steel, in .40) for $325 OTD because I told the guy at the shop I wanted a new gun in something I didn't already have that I could buy a box of ammo with and come out under $350.

It was tagged at something like $375, and had been there six months or so.

I love this gun.
 
bought a 'mixed bag' of guns and accessories from a widow who wanted the guns out of the house. Gave $200 for the lot.

Among the cheap pocket pistols and whatnot was an RPB open bolt Mac-11 chambered in 380 with a stack of steel mags.

Sold that mac for $900.

Bought a pre-ban Colt AR-15 during the ban for $400 from a friend who needed cash.

To this day everytime he sees me he asks when I am going to sell him his rifle back. The answer is always the same.
 
Not a gun store, but the trading post section right here on THR. I found a guy dumping all of his 7.62X39; ammo, dies, and Yugo SKS. Got the whole shebang for $375. I told him I already had a Yugo and asked if he was willing to sell just the ammo (same price) but he insisted I either take it all or none. Shot the rifle a couple times, it was ok, but it was all bubbafied so I sold it at the next gun show for $150. Ended up with almost 1300rds of 7.62X39 and dies for about $225.

Enfield No4Mk1*, beat stock, barrel looked shot out, $50. Turned out the barrel had never had the comso removed from when it was factory total repaired in Faz years earlier, other owners just cleaned off the outside, never fired it, brand new barrel. I get some one inch groups at 100 yards from that old warhorse, with handloads. Great rifle.
 
I bought an Astra A-100 9mm on impulse, as a play gun. In the pics the gunshop owner had sent me, it looked like it had rust speckles all over it, and he said it was rust, so I knew what to expect. He had taken it on trade at a gun show, and wouldn't say what he gave him for it, but at the cheap price I paid for it ($150), I didn't expect much.

When I got it home, I stripped it down and looked it over closely, I realized the "rust" was actually some sort of hardened gunk, almost like paint. I took an old dishcloth and basically soaked it, and the gun in CLP, and the junk started melting off. It took a while, but when I was done, the thing looked to be about 98%, and I don't really think it had ever been fired. It shot great, and I sold it to a friend's brother who offered me $300, and I couldn't resist. I got another one a year or so ago, on an action, and it had the same red gunk all over it, inside and out, and it cleaned up real nicely too, but it was like $250+ transfer, and I would only rate it at about 90%. Shoots as good as the first one though!
 
NOS HK 630, bought it with 2 extra mags, and a box of ammo for $500....
Guess they just wanted to get rid of it.....
 
Quite a few years ago, I had very little money to spend and had sold off everything I owned in 9mm and I wanted to get another semi auto in that cal. I went by the gunshop at opening time on a Saturday morning, took the owner some donuts and coffee and shot the breeze a while, finally asking him what was the best deal he would give me on a decent semi auto 9mm. I expected him to go pull something out of the gun case but instead he pulled his carry pistol out from a kydex holster and ejected the magazine and racked the slide and then handed me the pistol. You can have that for $300 and if you dont shoot it better then any 9 you have ever owned I will give you your money back.

It was an Astra A-100 and it is a Spanish copy of a Sig, I think a 228. Anyway, it holds 17 rounds and the price was right so I took it. Its heavy, but looks to be a dead on Sig clone. I took it to the range and OMG, the heavy frame pulls you back on target so fast and the trigger is so crisp and light, I shot 3-4 boxes of shells thru it and couldnt believe how accurate I was shooting. I was more surprised by that gun then in any I have ever bought, regardless of the cost or who made it. It is actually my favorite
9mm to plink with. I have 2 of them now, they are both shooters but I would scavenge one to keep the other shooting if I needed parts since Astra is out of business, it was a great surprise and didnt kill my budget! One bonus is that holsters for Sig's fit it and they are easy to find.
 
Was at the guns show two weekends ago and found a Polytech AK (preban milled reciever, 20" heavy barrel) at a dealer's table.. got it for $625 OTD (thought I did alright), then they hand me this beat up plastic case it came in.

Opened the case to find the original sling (nice, but no biggie), 10 extra mags (half of them 30 rounders), a 75 round drum mag, and 100 rounds of 7.62. :D

Needless to say, I was a happy camper after that.
 
Went to a Dick's sporting goods, bought a case of 12 gauge bird shot for the price of a box of 12 gauge birdshot. The cashier scanned the barcode and didn't realize that was the barcode for the individual boxes inside and not the whole case.
 
My most pleasant surprise was finding a very gently used HK P7 for sale at Gander Mountain a few years ago for only $550. This is before the influx of Saxony trades, when a nice P7 went for around $800, (and up). While placing it on layaway, the clerk informs me he thinks all that's included in the sale is the pistol and the one mag as shown in the display case.

The next day when I come in to finish paying for the P7 and take it home, another clerk come out of the back storeroom with my new pistol and the usual P7 black box. It contains all accessories, books, etc. and three magazines! At that time magazines were very hard to find and would fetch $50 to $75! That made the already low $550 all the sweeter. I was one happy camper that day!:D
 
I found a Remington 710 chambered in .270 for $100. I alomost left it there, but i got to thinking, Not the best gun in the world (by far) but for a hundred bucks? So I took it home and worked up a load for it and it is the most accurate gun i own. I will trade it off and get a better one one day, but it sure makes a nice deer gun i can beat up.
 
Can't recall any great deals on guns, but I recently bought a 1943 Springfield M1 Garand, with a new barrel and a full 192 round can of ammo in clips and bandoliers, for $700. The best deal I ever personally witnessed though, wasn't gun related. Back around 1975, my friend Rusty bought a 1968 Plymouth GTX for $1000. This was one of those "factory race cars" that was essentially a gutted shell with every high-powered option they had available. 426 Hemi, aluminum intake, Dana trans, Dana rear end, headers, dual-point distributor, the works. One of the rare "buy it and take it to the track" cars. No frills, all business. He blew it up, of course. That car would be worth a fortune now.
 
Sig-Sauer P225, parkerized, night sights. One of the best semiauto pistols ever, in my not so humble opinion, and only $900!

(Just kidding. I didn't buy it. Especially not at nine freaking hundred bucks.)

Ouch. No kidding that would be worth a fortune. A really nice one goes for about $150k these days last I saw.

I bought my Cobray M12 from a guy who was disgusted that it didn't work. I paid $125, discovered it had a bent firing pin, bought one online for $10, and now it's as good as new :D.
 
Maybe not such a great deal outside CA, but I bought a pristine nickel S&W Model 49 no dash that had been someone's mother's nightstand gun (never fired) for $300.
 
2003 a cz 52 looked to nice to have been shot muchly. $125 out the door was 25 more than others but it looked and checked out so nice i said i would take it. the tag said acc's (accessories) and in the shoe box was about 600 brass--mostly unfired starline, 2 more mags, a natty holster, Lee (green) dies a complete 9mm barrel and spring. more good: it shoots so flat that even with the rather lousy sights i get consistent hits on the 12" steel at 100 yards.

Years ago an electrition, that was doing work for my dad needed a hammer for a revolver.

I had to go out of town with the wife, while she was doing her thing, I went gunstoring, in one little shop I had browsed amd was about to leave when I spied a shoe box on a shelf behind the counter. I asked about it and it was a revolver just like the one that needed a hammer, in pieces missing a few parts. There was the hammer I needed, so I asked how much? five dollars, I sprained my wrist getting my wallet out, what can I say, what the electrition thought was going to be way more then fifty dollars if it could be found at all, was coming home for five dollars, besides it looked brand new maybe even never had been in a revolver.

Best deal I ever made, until he died the electrition would do things for my dad gratis, because we found the unfindable part and GAVE it to him! I told him it was only I five dollar part, but somehow he never believed me.
