Rather than hijack another thread, I'll start a new one.

What Western movie has the best gunfight scene?

I say that Open Range wins hands down. The last half hour of that movie was the most bada$$ gunfight in a Western I have ever seen.

Anyone know of any better ones?

"Open Range" was good.

My nomination for best movie gunfight (western) is "The Shootist".

J.B. Books in the saloon, on his birthday. Ridding society of the bottom of the barrel, in his last days on earth.

The worst part was when he was shot in the back by the bartender.

Open Range was a good one, except that I seem to recall one scene where a guy gets shot w/ a shotgun & goes flying backwards 5 yards (or am I getting my movies confused?). The final shootout in The Outlaw Josey Wales was good. Tombstone's rendition of the gunfight at the OK Corral was great. It seemed to closely follow how real handgun fights seem to go, lots more shooting than actual hitting, and people being hit in non-vital areas being able to continue the fight. Although the part where Doc Holliday fires his shotgun into the air to get the horse to rear up so he can shoot the guy hiding behind it seemed a little too Hollywood. Why didn't it already spook from the dozen or so shots already fired, especially the 1 or 2 the guy hiding behind it fired right below it's head?:scrutiny:

Open Range was good also good gunfight in Young Guns and almost all of Clint Eastwood westerns at some point have a good shoot out.

then two big gunfights in the wild bunch were not only WELL ahead of their time directorally, but still better than those in more recent films. unforgiven also gets a nod.

One thing that struck me as "realistic" about Open Range was it included a lot of missing at close range by all involved and very few "one shot stops" and magic cylinders.

The shotgun through the wall was a bit much, but come on, it was just the one thing in a whole field of gunfight goodness. You had some use of cover and concealment (and shooting centermass of the target you can see, the bad guy's foot).

The townsfolk running down the guy trying to get away was, cinematically, a great shot.

The 'climax' of Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven."

yup, the one in the bar, roscoe.

I have got to see the Wild Bunch !!! Whos gonna send me a copy?? I can not find it anywhere.

I always thought the rifle fights in Quigley down under where the best among any western "RIFLE" gun fight.
My favorite part of Quigley is at the end when he shoots Marston and says "I said I didn't have much use for them. I didn't say that I didn't know how to use them."

But Open Range still tops it.

Hands Down Broke Back Mountain.

Kidding.:neener: Really Im only joking, I've never seen the movie.

Tombstone , the OK Corral was a good one. I also like the scene in the trainyard where Kurt Russell kills all but one McLaury gang mamber, he lets the last guy go. Then he yells something to the effect of "You go back and tell them Im com'n, and Im bring'n Hell with me!". Man that was awsome.

The Wild Bunch is great way ahead of it's time followed by the shootist I can't leave John Wayne out for his last movie, dang bartender but opie took care of him.

Damn! I just watched the Wild Bunch shootout on Youtube. I forgot just how good that movie was. I'll have to rent it and watch it again. When I was in college, I took a film class for an elective and we watched that movie to learn about some of Sam Peckinpah's cinematic techniques.

Just watched the Open Range shootout again and I still think its better than the Wild Bunch shootout, but I think the Wild Bunch shootout is a close second.
