Best tactical and hunting rifle combo?

If you had one rifle to use for tactical and hunting that uses cheap and available ammo, what would it be?

300 wm or one of the short 30 caliber magnums...in a light wt rifle. You can always find 30 cal bullets

SKS with tech sight peep sights and target front post or AK with quick release side mount and scope. This can go form iron sighted fighting rifle to scoped hunting rifle in a second.

If you reload then .308 would be my choice because the ammo would be the cheapest and .308 has enough power for all needs. The rifles in this category are more expensive, such as M1A or Fal.

An AR in .223. For hunting it is fine for deer size game with the 64 gr. SP loads, or the Barnes TSX. For tactical applications what do you need to say.

Medium weight barrel, none of this 13lb. barrel stuff, 3-12X50mm scope, nice trigger, stable synthetic stock, adjustable cheek piece, sling swivels.

Get an AR15 M4 in 6.8 SPC or 6.5 grendel.You can hunt deer out to 300 yards plus with both these rounds.Plus the rifle will be light weight and provide plenty of firepower.

+1 on an AR in 6.8 SPC. I'd go with a midlength though, with a 16" barrel. It's what I use, along with the 5.56. If only I could find someone who makes a 6.8 upper with a 1 in 11" twist.... mine unfortunately is a 1 in 10.

The 6.5 is a great round, but I fear that it will be extinct someday soon.

If not for the "cheap, common ammo" requirement, an 18" AR15 in 6.8 SPC would be a pretty good candidate.

They will be light-weight all right, Don't know about the firepower part, since you can't find any ammo for them locally.

An empty rifle you can't find ammo for is always lighter then a loaded one.

several posters choices I agree with but take out the ar's as a 'hunting' rifle, it's definitely more of a 'fighting' rifle although sure I agree the .223 heavy slugs will do the job on deer with good placement, a base of skull shot DRT. also pistol-caliber levers although I like them mucho they're more of a 'defense' type of rifle that would fill in for hunting @ short range the .44mag being more suited and glass is a +. smaller deer don't take that much killing I've taken lots with a .22LR std-velocity useing a 'depradation' permit for housing associations that found deer eating up their hi-$$ shrubbery!
brings me to my Mini30 with 1.5X4.5X20 'tactical' scope with mil-dot reticle. experiments with Speer 150gr spitzer have had promiseing results on paper. sks is another good option my nephew's is a shooter as is his 336 scoped 30-30 another good choice.
