I plan on getting a shotgun in the next few months.

At this point, I like the SXP design more than the 500. I'm trying to decide about which finish is better.

I'm curious abouth these two finishes.

The Marinecote finish is some sort of Nickel-based finish. It's supposed to be great rust protector, but I've got some concerns about the durability of the finish. Is this more of a "regular" nickle finish or is it more like NP3? I'm just curious how well it holds up. How quickly does marinecote wear? Does it chip?

The SXP also looks very interesting. I really like what I've read about it, so far. I like the design, but my question is really more about the finish. The chamber and bore are both treated with hard chrome. It appears that the other metal surfaces are treated with black chrome. I've done some research and really haven't found that much useful information. I've googled it and looked through the first seven or eight pages of hits. I've read mostly vague descriptions.

Winchester claims that black chrome seems to be better than black oxide. Other websites say that it is less durable than hard chrome. That really leaves a pretty wide range of performance that black chrome may fall into. Does anyone own a SXP? What is your impression of the black chrome finish? Has it proven to be durable? Any rust? If you had to guess, would you say that it more like black oxide, parkerization, NP3, melonite, or chrome?

I know that these questions may be a little hard to answer. If anyone has any information about either of these finishes, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Electroless nickel is pretty tough. I've never seen a chipping problem, and it is real good around salt water - hence the marine designation. Black chrome in a polished finish is also pretty good, but in a flat finish I have my doubts. I have absolutely no doubt it would be better than a matte blue finish.
I would get the gun I liked best and don't worry too much. Unless you are bone lazy and put it away wet or muddy with perspiration on it you will probably never have any issues.
