I am wondering if anyone has any data on the bore diameter for Winchester 94s chambered for .38-55? I am finding lots of reports for the Marlins but nothing for the Win 94.

JN: From 1982. The Lyman 46th edition says .377" is the groove diameter. They say that cast bullets should be used exclusively with rifles with a larger bore than .377" for best accuracy.

I have a Winchester Legacy 1894 that slugs at .3794 but I would not assume that your's does as well. Get a soft lead slug and a brass rod and pound it through and take a measurement. That will be just the beginning.Though mine slugged at .379, it would not chamber any bullet above .379. I was not crazy about the idea of reaming the chamber so I use Bear Creek moly bullets which are realtively soft for mild (read original velocity) loads and for higher velocity loads (read heavy loads of 3031) I use a 21 Bhn bullet from Leadhead bullets. Both sized to .379. In both cases they obdurate adequately for good accuracy.Hornady factory bullets just tumbled.The Barnes are too much money. Though also expensive, there is a man in Floridia who hand-makes excellent jacketed bullets that run about .30 a peice but he does so in only very limited quantities.

Lyman has been undersizing .38-55 bullets for years and editions.
Ken Waters Pet Loads says his two Winchesters were .3785" and .379"; mine is .3785" as best I can mike the slugs, and I shoot .379" cast bullets in it.

Wow, looking at Midway, they've got cast bullets running from .376 to .380. Guess I'm definitely going to need to slug this one to be sure. :banghead:

Slugging the bore is the only true way to know. However, that is not the end of the story... My 94 slugs at .379 so I bought some .380 diameter cast bullets from Cast Performance. The bullets are great, but after seating the bullets, the overall diameter (including the case) caused problems with chambering. The loaded rounds would not consistently chamber because the cartridge was too fat. I just ordered some .378 bullets to correct the problem.

Ditto on slugging. That's the only way you'll know for sure with your particular gun.
