J&G has stainless Smith 64's that have the hammer bobbed for roughly 300 dollars in VG+ condition.

Buds has blued Smith 10's for roughly 300 dollars too with free shipping. I don't think these are bobbed hammer guns.

Which would you pick for a range gun? Both are 4 inch barreled handguns.

I kind of prefer stainless, but if it is a pain to add a hammer to the J&G gun that has the hammer bobbed, that might be a downside.

The Model 10. It is more of a classic and in original condition. Years ago I bought a Model 10 with a 3" barrel from J&G and is still one of my favorite pistols.

I agree razorback2003 unless of course you want a double action only revolver. The DAO version can be converted to a double/single action with a hammer and while not sure I believe the only part needed is the hammer. Anyway it can be converted easily enough. The price is good on the Model 64.

Since I have a Model 10 I would likely opt for the 64 and convert it. Also, you may want to give this thread a read.

Gun Parts Corp does appear to have hammer assemblies for these guns.

For me, based solely on direct personal experience with S&W .38 special police trade-in revolvers from those two vendors, it is J&G all the way. The Model 64 would definitely be my choice. As is often said, YMMV.

I'm a huge fan of the M10 so you know where my vote goes. Especially for a range gun, it's nice to have a full hammer so you can fire single action when checking the accuracy of ammo.

I really like my model 64 and all else being equal would rather the stainless steel, but if that meant giving up the hammer spur I'd probably take the Model 10 instead.

I wonder how much effort there is to converting one of those J&G DAO Brinks Model 64's.

If there is a lot of effort, I am leaning towards the Model 10 at bud's, since the gun will not be carried.

Spare hammers for K frame revolvers are not that common any more. When you do find them they are in the $35 to $40 range plus shipping. If you can do the work yourself that the price but if not you have to add the gunsmith's hour to the cost.

Even if you were going to carry the revolver there is nothing wrong with a Blue gun. I have a M36 I carried for 2 years and there is no rust anywhere on the gun. A good gun oil fixes that problem...

Me....

Id opt for the stainless DAO 4" model 64 from www.JGsales.com . The pencil barrels are slick and can come in handy in a pinch. :D
State or federal disasters, having your main sidearm damaged or in the shop for custom work, using a pistol for defense then having the model 64 as a spare while the legal system spins it's wheels.
I owned a great NIB Ruger GPNY .38spl 6 shot revolver. It wasn't used & sat in a gun dealer's back supply room since 1991  . I got it in 2006. The gun worked great & used it on a few security posts.
The NYPD model 64 DA only revolvers look good.

Wouldn't a M10 work just as well as a backup gun in case your main gun is in the shop during a disaster?

Yeah....

A police trade-in model 10 could do okay but Id want a stainless steel S&W .38spl if it was being stashed in a "get home" bag or survival kit. ;)
You could snag a cheap used .38spl then get it treated with Cerakote or Metalife. ;)

Love the stainless look. What's up with NY and DAO guns?! To save yourself money, buy the Model 10. I'd go with the 64, but, I feel comfortable changing out the hammers, (springs, whatever). I'm sure you have friends that could at least help?

My fear with the J&G model 64’s is that it may not be just a replacement hammer. A lot of police turn-ins have also been worked on inside to prevent the neutered hammer from being cocked.

DA only....

By DA only, they mean no single action. ;)
I have no problem with neutered(a LAPD term) guns.
A revolver or pistol used for defense isn't a race gun or something your going to qualify with for the Summer Olympics or the AMU(Army Marksmanship Unit).
You can buy a surplus or used DA/SA model 10 .38spl if you really want to shoot it that way but I prefer the spurless model 64 version.
That's more for collector or kitch value too.
In 2014, there are way more semi auto pistols for defense than any snubs or DA/DAO revolvers.

He stated it was to be a range gun though. With that in mind the versatility of having the hammer spur adds value. It's not like the gun won't shoot DA if you want it to - you just still have the option of SA if you want.

Coincicentally, I was looking at both of these earlier today. I think the Buds ad said these were only available to their special club members (or whatever they call it.)
I bought one of these DAO stainless trade-ins from J&G a couple years ago, seem I recall the shipping being kinda steep (a plus for Buds' free shipping), and I thought the cyclinder lock-up was pretty sloppy, and condition wasn't as good as I felt they're description said it was. I sent them an e-mail, they weren't very sympathetic and they pretty much said, "don't like it? Send it back."
I sold it for what I had in it, to a work buddy that just wanted a self-defense pistol in the house for his wife.
If Buds will sell it without a big headache, I'd go with one of their un-screwed-with model 10's.

Since the OP said "range gun", I'd go with the SA/DA Model 10. It's much easier to shoot accurate groups single action.

I went by J&G and took a look at the neutered 64 trade-ins. They had six in the show case. Some look in fair to pretty good condition and at least one was a boat anchor in waiting. All of them with various type of rubber grips. Just an FYI.
