Does anyone have any experience with, or knowledge of, these used S&W Model 10 revolvers that J&G Sales has been selling over the past few years?

Seems like $330 for a square butt or $400 for a round butt. Used, Good to Very Good with CAI Import Marks. Anyone know the history of these guns or where the came from? The very few reviews on the J&G site seem positive, but I put no faith in them.

I'm looking for a somewhat disposable/cheap revolver that's a good shooter. I may consider having said gun stripped and parkerized.

They look pretty rough to me. Finish wear is one thing but if the bore is messed up or they have timing issues that is another thing. Also, they seem rather high to me given the condition. If you have to spend anything more on it I think you could find a better deal on a model 10.

New S&W 642's are around $400, they may be worth a look also if that fits you need. Many of the J-frames are around that price also.

The cheap one looks rough.

My imported Model 10 from Bud's came in a condition somewhere between the cheap one and the expensive one for $269, so just off that data point, J&G's price looks pretty high. For that price, I'd rather look around pawn shops and gun shows and see what I could scrounge up; I'm betting $400 cash will take you further than what these guys are offering.

I believe these were French police guns.

I got this trade in Model 64 back about 8-10 years ago now from J&G. It was a little rough on the outside, and needed new grips, but has a buttery smooth DAO trigger, and shoots great. Cleaned up pretty good with some Mothers.

It was a good deal, at $250. I wouldnt pay what theyve been getting for them the past couple of years though.

I got this Model 10 earlier this year at a local shop, in real good shape, with some minor finish wear at the muzzle, for $350. Other than that finish wear, its nearly new.

I see pretty nice model 10's around here on a regular basis, and they are usually in the $350-400 price range these days. The price has definitely been going up the past few years too. All have been in much better condition than what Ive seen J&G selling for about the same money or more.

If you want one, I think Id wait and see what pops up in a local shop. I think youll do better if you do.

Those with the round butts are less common than their square butt brethren. Hence the $400.

But still too high from j&g. As stated elsewhere here, you can do much better.

Also do not be afraid to look at the taurus equivalent revolvers like the model 82. They represent good value and build quality-much better and more consistent than some of their other offerings.

I've bought a few guns from J&G over the years and they have always done right by me and if they state a gun is in Very Good condition, it is. That said their recent prices do seem a little high for trade-in police weapons.

J&G prices their used S&W revolvers high. Look through that section and you'll see what I mean. Once you add in the transfer costs, the expense seems unreasonable to me. You'd probably do better on a gun auction site. I think they get away with it because revolvers are still popular here for some reason-- another local shop I do business with is basically uninterested in trade-ins that aren't revolvers. If I drive to the next town over, I save at least a hundred bucks on a used S&W, and it's only ten miles. :)

Price is high compared to those in my area. Model 10s aren't exactly rare. Revolvers aren't that hot an item around me other than L frames. I picked up 2 Model 10s in very good condition not that long ago in a private sale for $100 each. Rare bargain, sure, but shows what you can find.

For the prices they're asking plus paying for a parkerizing job you'd be just a little short of a new GP100.

Prices seem a bit high for Model 10s in that condition. I would look around locally or else see whats available online.

I would pass.

My Ruger police service six is a cia import allegedly from South America was only $265 in very good condition.

I bought two model 10 NY DC round butt trade ins w/service holsters and 4 speed loaders and pouches last year for $330/ea. from a LGS. I was able to choose between several and inspect them so I figured they were worth a little more. They have some wear but function perfectly and cleaned up nicely with Brownells Oxpho-blue on the high wear areas. I've noticed the prices have crept up since then, maybe because the flood of NY trade ins dried up. I wouldn't be in a rush at that J&G price. I like to be able to inspect a used gun before I buy it. Once you find your model 10 you'll love it. Good luck.

My experience with J&G is they understate the condition of their guns. At least by my standards.

As for the prices being high. The market for good used revolvers is being driven by gun bans as States like California ban semi-autos. Best get on ship now before it gets to far out to sea.

I appreciate all of the feedback.

I didn't realize the price was so high because I'm in Alaska, and everything is expensive here. I've been watching the local online sales forum here for about a year and the only revolvers, other than 44 magnums, that I've seen were a few Taurus guns, which I'm hesitant to buy. I've seen one Model 10, with a lock, for $600. We're a low population state so the used market is insufficient. I'm also not interested in any new Smith revolvers.

That's an interesting concept that would have escaped my notice.

Didn't see that under your nametag.

Yeah, if there is no other market available, then I would probably go for one of those J&G guns. The Model 10s are sweet to shoot, and the price is high but not outrageous.

I just took a cursory look over at gunbroker, and every Model 10 I saw (first 20-30 at least) had starting bids of over $400.

See if you can find a model 15 or 66. I bought my m10-5 for $300 otd at cabelas with its box. Gun is in pretty bad shape however.

My 66 is marked SD Sheriff. Paid $385 a couple years ago but it was from a LGS that I did a lot of business with.

The adjustable sights make all the differnce past 15 yards or so. The m10 is smoother and locks up tighter but I can shoot the 66 much better.

IMG_0364-2.jpg I took a good look at used handguns on J&G Sales last night. To my judgement prices were high across the board , quite high. I actually thought that the traded-in model 10's , while high , were not as out of line as most of the other used stuff.

The up side - they are in stock ; if it is your goal to acquire a S&W model 10 you can slap down your money and they'll send one to you. There is value in that.

Me , I'm a brokerage lurker. I got my 10 thru Gunbroker 3 months ago ; it came from an evidence lock-up in a P.D. in Oklahoma , it had been in the rain and had surface rust. Preliminary clean-up went well , action is excellent. $232. IMG_0364-2.jpg

Those are both phenomenal guns, and I'd love to have a 15, just because it was the Vietnam era air crew survival gun, but, as succh I consider it to be a collector piece rather than a disposable gun.

If its $300 why is it less disposible than a m10?
