I just got a Double Star upper. Looked down the barrel, noticed some crud. Tried to clean it out. Everything came out except the largest piece. I ran a bore snake through several times, no effect. Ok, ramped up to a brush on a cleaning rod. Better, but still there. Time for a patch. Hmm... still no better. Thats really odd.... to the internet.

Doing some searches on Ar15.com, leads me to believe I have a burr at the gas port. Do I need to do anything about it? It's basically a noticeable black spot on one side of the bore. I can tell that the brush and patch were hanging up there. On AR15, it seems that they either believe it will wear down as you shoot, or you can remove the gas block and clean it out. How do I remove the gas block? It's a low profile gas block on a heavy barrel. There appears to be three set screws holding it on. Do I need to just loosen those and pull it off, or is it something more complex?

Thanks,
James

i'd call up double star ASAP!on there home page it reads"best AR-15 known to mankind"i think or some phrase like that saying there the best
surely if they make the best they will stand behind there product.

Called them up and the tech said that it's normal and it'll shoot out.

Do fibers from the patch hang up in the barrel? If not it is likely not a burr. Oil/carbon/powder fouling all can work thier way into the gas port in the barrel. What do to remove this is to run some bore cleaner into the gas tube from the receiver end and lear it up muzzle end down for a while to let the cleaners work thier way to the barrel. Then I take compressed air and blow out the tube.

Is anyone using EDM to 'drill' gas ports yet? It seems like that would be just the ticket to avoiding these kinds of problems.

My DS upper had the same problem - the very first round took the burr away, and still hit the X at 75 yards.
