Bushmaster Carbon 15?

I've heard that the carbon fiber upper doesn't dissapate heat as well as it should. That said, what parts about the rifle does she like the most? is it the lightweight of the gun and the fact that she doesn't have to deal with the weight or is it the looks or the gun?

The lightweight of the rifle really has alot going for it.

If its mostly the weight itself, you COULD save yourself some money and do a number of things.

1. Buy KelTec SU-16(or 2-3 for the price of the carbon 15). this rifle or pistol(it comes in both configuations) is about as light as he carbon-15 and I see no reason the SU-16 cant do anything you'd ask the carbon-15 to do.

2. buy the carbon in 2 parts: upper and lower. this will save you some money.

3. make you own lightwieght rifle using a CAV-15 lower with a pencil barrel. MAY save you money. a plus of this way to go is you can custom tailor the gun to its user.

4. buy the gun and not save much

I have never used a complete Carbon-15 rifle but I did use a stripped Carbon-15 Upper to build my ultra-light AR15 (5 lb. 1 oz. without magazine) and it has run perfectly.

depends entirely on what she wants it for.

if she's looking for a defensive gun, you're definitely about to make an expensive mistake.

curiously, why would it be a mistake? are they unreliable?

ive never had or even held one but the lightweight has grabbed my eye a time or two. never seriously enough for me to consider buying one, but less than 5lbs always gets my attention for some reason.

the last time i looked at the complete gun, it contained several proprietary parts that are not compatible with aftermarket replacements. which is not the case with the stripped upper/lower they sell with the same carbon 15 name

if you buy the stripped upper/lower, like I did, and make your own rifle with otherwise quality components, it can be pretty reliable. however, it may not last very long. i don't consider the complete guns reliable at all. and i think the pistols are just useless for all sorts of reasons

here's mine

they are very light, but the uppers are also pretty flexible. i can squeeze them with my fingers.

also, after 1500 rnds or so in 3gun matches (plus dryfire practice at home), the upper receiver latch that holds the charging handle wore smooth so the CH would move back when fired. bushmaster of course offered to replace the upper, but since i'd painted it, i didn't bother.

note that i'm also using a JP aluminum bolt carrier, instead of the normal steel BCG. i imagine this is a bit more gentle on the carbon fiber upper. and i have the gas port / ar-restor pneumatic buffer tuned so that the bolt doesn't hold open on the last round, which probably reduces some wear in the lower too. and i'm also using the jp trigger, which is screwed into the sides (kinda like KNS pins) so the lack of rotation, and the screws holding it together instead of just free floating pins probably helps reduce wear too

it is light though

that makes total sense. i dont like propriatary parts either, and knowing that, if ever i must have one (although i dont ever see myself having one) i would be inclined to do the same.

thx for the info.

(you wouldnt happen to have a build thread for that rifle would you?)

She shot my Bushmaster HBAR for the first time the other day. She saw the Bushmaster Carbon15 a week later at one of our local dealer's. She liked the light weight more than anything. It couldn't have weighed more than 4.5 pounds.
