I've searched for montana-specific forums, but the only ones I've found had less than 100 members... Anyway, I am seriously considering moving to Libbey in the end of August. I have a lucrative, telecommuting technical position so I don't have to worry about money or finding a job there. I do have some questions though, and as THR is my favorite national forum, I figured I'd ask them here (hope thats ok)

1) What are the gun laws for CCW, Open Cary, .50 and bigger rifles, NFA items, etc? (Coming from a half Utah half California life, I've seen a wide difference of laws)

2) What places would you recommend for realty\land? Personally, I'd like to buy about 200 acres and have a custom home built, but all the websites offering land are trying to sell fake ranches or 20 acre burnt out parcels...

3) Whats the snow-fall like compared to Utah? (Is it really as bad as people say or is it average >2 ft)?

4) Can you recommend any other sites for information about MT? I am research-intensive and like to learn as much as possible.

Thanks in advance for any replies, my main concern is finding a place and being able to purchase NFA\50's :)

1) CCW is "shall issue" but you can carry open most places and even carry concealed without a permit outside of city limits. There are no state restrictions on ownership that I know of.

2) You're going to pay a bunch of money for any land in western Montana. I hope you're a millionaire if you want 200 acres and a home. Central and eastern MT is quite a bit cheaper, but it's going up fast.

3) Snow varies by location, elevation, slope aspect, and year.

4) http://www.mt.gov/css/default.asp

BTW, the place right next door to me is for sale. It is 140 acres, nice modular home about 2 yrs old, 3-bay metal garage, and a wood shop/chicken coop/shelter. The guy just passed away. I think they are asking mid $300K's but I'm not sure what the final listed price was.

Two sides of the property are bordered by large working ranches. One of my corners touches the corner of the 140 acre parcel. There is a 20 acre parcel chopped out next to me, but it is vacant and the owner (who I've not met in 4 yrs now) lives out of state.

NW MT private rare property $2,900,000.00 have fun!!

nmar.com to find land for sale in nw mt

I grew up in LIBBY, I live in kalispell now, and if your afraid of snow turn back now cuz you will get your fair share here in the mountains, the further up you go the deeper it gets and the longer it stays.
On a good year 48" in 48 hours, On a bad year maybe 12" a week
Likely snow fall between Sept to April Invest in a capable 4x4 (no Fords)

CCP are easy to get +$50 and prints.
Open carry is ok, you dont see it much , other than hunting rifles in rear windows.
As for firearms if you got it, bring it!
During the spring and summer months their is a gun club that has diferent shoots every 3rd sunday bring lots of rounds!

If you have any more specific questions PM me

Brig;

Montana based hunting & shooting forum: www.baitshopboyz.com, currently runnning 683 members worldwide. I live in Great Falls and moderate on the site.

One year wait for CCW, then it's the usual runaround. Gotta be able to list three responsible parties who'll swear you're not a total perv, $80 bucks, fingerprints, and that's about it. The county sheriff issues the permit, not the state, which limits the reciprocity.

Open carry is statewide except where specifically prohibited, campus's, govt. buildings, etc. Fifties, no problem, how many do you want? Carpet bombing for coyotes is allowed but expensive.

thanks very much for all the replies. I've lived in Central Utah with a 5 foot snowpack, so "being afraid of snow" wouldn't describe me. Now, living in Alaska with 12 foot of pack, that gets a little old...

Anyway, TallPine, I'm very interested in your neighbors parcel. Could you PM me the info?

My last question for yall is what are the rules for smog\automobile checks? I have a non-streetable car in CA because of all the smog rules, and am wondering if I could register it there.

thanks!

My fantasy is to hit the Florida lottery and move to Montana.

Not that I don't love Florida, but if I won a modest amount (2 - 3 million), I could get a condo in Daytona for 1.5 million, or I can get a nice 4 bedroon 3 bath house w/2 fireplaces on 50 acres in Montana for the same price.

Hey, as long as I'm close to a good sized lake so I can fish, I can deal with the snow!

This isn't MT specific, but it's always a good idea to contact the local Chamber of Commerce wherever you plan on moving. They can put you in touch with local realtors and such to get you on the right track.

Mufflers are now allowed. But I believe that there is a law that all farm pickups must have doors and hood of a different color. It is a felony to drive into town without a dog riding in the back of your pickup. Wear your seatbelt, or else you will be given another warning. :D

Anything else you want to know...? ;)

brighamr, I will have to call the late owner's son to find out what agent has the property listed. BTW, this is in "central Montana" about an hour from Billings, not up in the western mountains. Rolling hills, rimrocks, pine and juniper trees, and grass. It is really green right now.

I worked in Libby for 3-4 years and I loved it. They have the best public shooting range I've ever seen. covered benches, 500 yard lane, the works!

It's a great place to be!

If you want to get a good , real time look check out:

http://www.libbywebcam.com/

You can see the whole town.

One thing that's nice about libby is that there are thousands of acres of national forest out there. You don't need a big spread to have the run of the area.

Did they ever get all the asbestos cleaned up around Libby? They had it all over from the vermiculite mines last I heard. They were going to haul out the dirt from a lot of the town from contamination.

Paco;

'Course because Montana is the 4th largest state in the union & has less than 1/12th the population of the Keystone State, we can hunt with pretty much whatever kind of gun we want to. Semi-auto huntin' guns, rifles, stuff like that. I feel your pain - then I chortle.

asbestos still lerks

I go to Libby every wensday , and each time their tearing up a different lawn
and sucking out insulation from some house.

Yeah you never know how great Montana is until you live other places. It is hands down the best gun friendly state in the country overall because it has the space to go out and shoot and actually enjoy the sport. I will tell you that I have never been worried about needing a CCW in Montana. Hopefully Montana will keep the riff-raff out that these other states I have seen be plagued with. One can only hope. :banghead:
