Caps

No. 10 or No.11? It will be a Uberti 1860 Army. It will be here tomorrow. Do I need to try them both? How about using a capper? Do you guys prefer them or do you use thumbs? Don't know much about this cap and ball stuff. I'm a rock lock shooter!

#10 works best on my Pietta '58s, not sure about your Uberti. #11 would fall off of my Pietta during recoil, but a slight pinch will keep them in place. #10s are a snug fit. I personally dont use a capper.

CCI #11 are loose on my Pietta 1860. A little pinch keeps them on, otherwise they fly off after the first shot.

CCI #10 fit perfectly.

Your Uberti may be the opposite. Also, from what I understand, Remington #11 is not the same size as CCI #11. In other words, all #11s are not created equal.

You may just have to try some out. Over size is workable, just pinch them. Undersized, well, you'd have to cut them to get them to fit.

I don't use a capper, just put 'em on with my finger. Capper might be nice if it worked well; sometimes those little buggers are hard to get on without dropping them a couple of times.

I can tell you what fits on my guns. Whether or not that will work on yours is anybody's guess. So, yes, you'll have to try more than one. Or maybe the first one you try will work.

When talking about cap sizes you need to also include the manufacturer. CCI No. 10's are not the same size as Remington No. 10's; the same goes for No. 11's.

#10 Remingtons have always worked well for me on stock Uberti and Pietta nipples. And I always use a revolver (snail) capper. Easier to maneuver than my fat fingers, and seats the cap well.

I have settled on #10 Remington's for all my cap and ball guns.....aside from fit I found that the CCI's would fragment and jam up the works, seems like they are too powerful to stay on the nipples after going off.

I just got my first percussion revolver recently and it was a Pietta 1860 army. I don't know if Ubertis would be the same.

Here's what I found out on my pistol.

CCI 10's fit snug and I thought they would be perfect. Actually they don't seat far enough down on the nipple so that they almost never fired on the first hammer strike. The first hammer strike would push them down and then they would shoot on the second time around the cylinder.

CCI 11's were too loose and would not stay on the nipple unless you pinch them to make them a little bit oval. Then they do stay on fine. They all shot on the first hammer strike. You would have a problem if you wanted to use a standard capping tool. I don't know if you could pinch them first and then load them in the tool. I don't use a capping tool, just a pair of needle nose pliers. You do need something to put the caps on. Your fingers probably won't work for a colt.

Remington 10s were by far the best. Fit perfectly and fired the first time around every time. Unfortunately they cost a little more and most stores that have powder supplies don't seem to carry them. Bass Pro shops have them if there's one near you.

Hmmm, I thought the CCI #10s fit perfectly on my Pietta 1860 Army, but unlike you, I have yet to test fire them. That is not encouraging news. Guess I'll be using the #11s for a while, or I'll just have to pull the trigger 12 times to get 6 balls downrange...

I wonder if pressing the #10 caps down firmly with a dowel or the end of a pencil would help?

Oversize caps are easily and symmetrically re-sized using a small socket from a ¼'' ratchet set. Either a 5/32” or 4mm size will work.


Simply place cap on hard flat surface open side up and apply downward force with the socket. A gentle tap may be required. If the re-sized cap resists being removed from the socket gently grab it with pliers and rock it back and forth.


I modified my socket slightly with a pointed stone on a Dremel tool to provide a forcing cone of sorts.

I had the exact same results as Lightning. Until i replaced the original nipples with treso now #11 cci work perfect without pinching them

Why?

There's good evidence that OEM nipple cone sizes vary from batch to batch even within the same manufacturer and model. It's quite possible that the nipples on your gun are different than those on Lightning12's.

VERY TRUE mykeal. until i read lightning i was pretty much laughing because what anyone says about their revolver means nothing because you can buy two of the same gun and have two different types of nipples.

In the store. I had a choice between CCI #10 and CCI #11 and #11 Magnum. IThe 10's were too tight no doubt. I chose the regular #11's. They fit much better. I'll look for Remington caps at Bass Pro next time I'm there. Dissapointed that the revolver did not come with a nipple wrench.

Tested the CCI #10s on my Pietta 1860 today

As I was saying, the CCI #10 caps fit perfectly on the nipples that came on my Pietta 1860 Army, as well as the extra set of stainless nipples I ordered from Dixie Gun Works. Today I got to the range for some shooting, and I have to say the caps worked flawlessly. None of them came off before they were fired, and every single one of them went bang on the first strike.

Looks like I need to buy some more...
