I'm in a bit of pickle. I'm starting a local club league, run n' gun type, next week with my new 4.2" Redhawk 44. I need a holster that covers the trigger guard, OWB type, strong side (right handed for me), and I need it to be about $50 (which pretty much rules out anything leather).

My intention is to buy a holster from Diamond D Leather, but they don't stock any holster other than their shoulder holster, so it's a 10 week wait time for a hip holster; the league will be over by then. I've looked at Triple K, Galco, Simply Rugged, etc, and I just don't see anything there I would want to own. (That's not a dig on those companies' products; they just don't suit me.) As such, I don't feel like paying those prices (not that those aren't fair prices) for something I don't even want.

I'm slowly working through the list of holster makers posted elsewhere in this sub-forum, but if anyone knows of perhaps a nylon or other entry level type holster, I'd appreciate the info.

Thanks

Uncle Mikes comes to mind for inexpensive holsters. Not much to look at, but functional

I had totally forgotten about those guys, and that's pretty much what I'm talking about, but they don't make any holsters for any of the bieg bore Ruger revolvers. (Neither does Safariland/Bianchi)

Safariland or Bianchi (same company now)

I'm always willing to help somebody out, but I'll admit this stuff always bugs me. You have a $1,000 gun, that shoots ammo that typically costs around a $1.00 per round, and you have a hard time justifying a holster that costs any more than a box of ammo. I guess everybody has to economize somewhere.

I haven't made myself clear. I'm "economizing" (good word choice BTW) on a holster, because the $165 holster I want isn't available for 10 weeks. I'm trying not to spend half the cost of that holster on a holster just to use for 10 weeks.

Shopruger.com has two holsters for the 4" Redhawk, $38 and $54, respectively. I don't own the COWS model, but do own the triple K, very serviceable, and very affordable holster.

If you're really wanting to get it done on the cheap, you might consider molding your own kydex. You can get that done for about $25 if you can scavenge the press components from your garage/shop.

Can't tell for certain from the photos, but neither of those look like they cover the trigger guard. (The Triple K, on their website, looks like it does not.) That's one of the league requirements-holster must cover the trigger guard. But yeah, otherwise, either of those would do as a stand-in.

Anyone have any idea how much bigger a S&W X-Frame (500 S&W) is over the Redhawk? Uncle Mikes has a full flap holster for the Smith I might try. It will have to be an online, sight unseen, purchase (I hate doing that), but if it doesn't work, I'm stuck with it as it will cost more to ship it back than I paid for it. Another option is their Size 2 sidekick which is for "3-4 inch medium or large double action revolvers."

if you're looking for inexpensive I found that the WWII British canvas holster for their .455 Webley revolver will hold the Redhawk quite nicely. My brother worked up in Alaska and that's what I got him so he could carry his Redhawk on his hikes through the woods. You can find them on Ebay for around $27 with free shipping.

Thanks for the tip. That's very interesting. Hmmm. Because the holster I want to buy is essentially a flap type holster that, aside from be form-fitted to the contours of the gun, is very very similar to the holster you describe. I doubt I would have ever thought of that, although, as I write this, I seem to recall reading it here somewhere else.
