Does anyone know a good cheap place to buy .40 S&W and what price is considered a good price for just plain old target/plinking ammo? IS $10.70 for a box of 180 grain fmj 50 American Eagle a good price?

Also, where is a good place to buy cheap Federal personal defense ammo? The gun store I go to charges $15 a box of 20 for the 135 grain stuff! Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Just bought some 165 gr. .40 S & W ammo last evening at Wally World in the 100 round Win. Clean box for 14.97.

Blain,

I don't know where you can pick it up cheap, but do yourself a favor and get some American Eagle 165 grain FMJ for practice. It has MUCH less recoil than the top end 40 S&W loads. It will help you with your technique.

Ahhh, some Wally world 100 packs! Great deal, almost as cheap as 9mm's!

I wonder how the recoil and accuracy on these are?

I just bought the Winchester 100 rd. .40 box for 14.97 as well here at the Temple, TX Wal-Mart. Check yours again...it's not WinClean. That stuff is more expensive.

On a side note I thought that the bullets in the value boxes were loose packed but I was surprised to find they were stuck in the little trays just like the 50pks. Do the 9mm value packs come loose or am I just losing it?

Thanks Brad,

I checked again and you are right. The .40 is the value pack. The .38's and .357's that I also bought were the Win Clean in 50 rd. boxes. Used the 40 ammo yesterday for a steel plate shoot and it worked very well. Plates fell with one hit as opposed to the 9mm ammo that I used last month that sometimes required two or three hits to knock down the steel targets.

Seems as though every WalMart in the country except the ones I shop at have 165gr. 40cal :p

www.ammoman.com has 165gr Speer Gold Dots for $109 for 500 rds

Walmart is clearing the Federal .40 S&W 135 grain ammo for $5.50 per 20, I got the last three boxes.

Hope this helps.

Cheap Price on New .40SW Ammo

Cheaper Than Dirt is currently offering new Sellier + Belott .40SW ammo (180-gr, FMJ) for a shade over $7/box. That's a real good price, but the steal is they are currently offering a flat rate of $20 shipping on any order weighing less than 100 pounds for internet orders. A case (1000 rounds) of .40 weighs about 40 pounds, so I ordered two cases and the total price for both was about $305 complete shipped to my door. That's about $152/case for new .40 ammo shipping included. That's the best deal I have even seen, and I have been buying it everywhere for about five years.

My 2 cents worth

For small quantities of practice rounds Walmart. For larger qty's it's hard to do better than Cheaper Than Dirt. If you have a friend that reloads you can do even better. You supply the components, you learn something in the process, you get a heap of ammo cheap, and you get to spend a Saturday talking about guns.

As for personal defense loads: DON'T SCRIMP !!!!! PAY THE PRICE FOR TOP NOTCH AMMO, YOUR LIFE AND MAYBE SOMEONE ELSES DEPEND ON IT!!!

Complete this sentance:
I feel like ______________ because I had to defend my girlfriend / wife / child / mother and was unsuccessful because the ammo I chose failed to function correctly.

Almost hate to spill the beans on this one because usually they get swamped with business and raise prices:

My last case of .40SW 180gr FMJ was bought from a place called Precision Cartridge as I recall. It is reload, but the case I have shot is very good quality and the price was $140/1000 including delivery which is $7/box dropped into your hands. In general, the cheapest new .40SW ammo is Sellier + Belott and it runs about $160 - $170 at the discount places (plus shipping).
