First post, so be gentle.

I see several posts on this topic. The last thread was closed when ADMIN requested it start fresh here. However, I don't see that anybody actually has done it?

I got my WM338 in a trade from a friend for a JD440 track loader. His dad bought it new to hunt brown bear and died before he ever got to use it. What a beautiful gun. I use it to punch finger size holes in 1/2" steel plate in the back yard. Lots of fun and the neighbors have not called the police yet. The recoil seems about the same as my single shot shotgun and that is pretty amazing. It is the fun of shooting a .50 cal without paying $5 a round. Plus you have the option of those Barnes tungsten rounds too.

I stupidly assumed that any auto had a flush clip like the mini14. The flip down job is a pain and it only hold 3 rounds. If I actually used it to hunt, I would want to be able to load /unload quickly because I hunt from the truck. Plus I like to carry several clips with different bullet types.

I thought of just selling it and getting another model that comes with a clip, but I don't really see anything listed. HK was referenced but HK-USA has no 338 WM autos listed.

I guess if nobody has done it, then I should not be the first to try because I would likely ruin the gun.

Thanks,

I'd leave it as is, and sell it to get something more to your liking.

First .338 WM is intended for elk sized game and up. If you need more than three rounds, you're doing it wrong.

Generally cartridges in that power level are only going to be found in bolt actions, and those will most likely have fixed, or hinged floor-plate type magazines also.

How do you keep track of the different zeros for the different ammo types? Dial on dope when you change magazines?

What are you talking about

If you "hunt from the truck" why would you possibly need detachable magazines?

"...my WM338..." What rifle? None of 'em come with a clip. Mind you, there's no game in North America that requires a magnum of any kind.
The Browning BAR Safari comes in .338 Win Mag with a 3 round detachable magazine. MSRP is $1270 without the BOSS, $1400 with it.
"...like to carry several clips..." $69.99 each for extra .338 Win Mag BAR magazines.
H&K made a semi-auto in .300 Win Mag. About $70 each for an extra mag, if you can find one.
Barnes tungsten rounds are copper with a small tungsten based core.

A rare gun indeed

Thanks for the advice as even negative retorts are meaningful. It appears that I will be a rare bird should I actually mount a removable clip into this gun.

I see the X bolt comes with a removable rotary clip. I assume there is some kind of clip box in it. I could buy the box and just see how much it would take to mate them up. Maybe just buy a used X bolt and sell the BAR?

I apologize for not responding to other questions as I don't want to get off topic from gunsmithing.

it's not a damn CLIP, it's a magazine, and forgive my ignorance is it even legal in your state to hunt from your truck?

CJ: I also own a BAR in .338............lightweight alloy framed version. Great rifle and very accurate as well........I stoke mine with Nosler 225 accubonds over 70 gr of IMR 4350.............really too much for deer, but decisive as it can be. Last buck I shot with mine was in the Appalachians, deep in a 'holler' & I hit him a bit high in the shoulder.......minimal meat damage, dead right there. Deer just flipped upside down and never quivered.

Far as installing a larger magazine (clip, for you pedants), probably not too practical and likely a difficult proposition due to the belted case.....still, if you want to try you might pick up a few BAR military mags or some other surplus & see if it'd have the possibility of feeding...tho I doubt it.

As an aside, I lived in Alaska for three years in the '60s, & that BAR came out shortly after I left........had it been on the market while I was there I'd darn well have owned one...........even with a total of only four shots it beats the devil out of a bolt gun. Those who challenge that statement have never walked up on a pie plate sized, long clawed, griz print in the mud that had no water in it when it'd been raining hard all day!!!

Great gun............were I you I'd keep it and keep it like it is.
