It arrived today! My HRA M1 Garand from the CMP.. I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised..... I got a service grade..... and it rated a 1 + on muzzle and 2 on throat.....overall this rifle looks excellent... has some handling dings but not a lot..... obviously it did not see that much actual use..... did I just get lucky? or what are your experiences with recent CMP rifles?

No pictures? What's with that? :)

Let's see, I believe for every 1,000 Plus CMP post they average one unhappy customer.

1. Pictures!
2. Choot it!

Congratulations on getting oyur own piece of military history. The Garand is more fun to shoot than I ever imagined. I have a CMP Special grade that I finally got to the range two weeks ago. I hit a 6" 3 shot group at 200 yds on my first time out. I was honestly surprised how little recoil it dished out. On a scale of 1 to 10 it's definetly a 10.

Now it's your turn to see how much fun it is to shoot.
Get us some photos and get to the range as soon as you can.

Regards,
Gearchecker

I ordered it the third week of March..... it arrived today..... I ordered ammo on the same order.... the ammo arrived late June.....

Range trip and pics this weekend.....

The service grades are usually pretty good especially the HRAs since they were made late in the production cycle. Probably lots of handling but not much shooting.

Congrats on finally receiving your rifle. Clean it, grease it, shoot it and enjoy it.

Careful though, Garands are like Lays potato chips. Nobody can have just one.:)

Nice, congrats. The m1 is my favorite gun to shoot.

I have not bought a Garand lately, but I have bought a couple in the last couple of years - service grade specials. They have been unused GI rifles with repro but good quality nice fitting wood, and likely repro stock metal. Pristine as far as wear, only minor handling marks in the exterior finish.

I would not hesitate for a second to buy one. Orrest Michaels of CMP said a week or two ago they only had something like 600 left of the HRA, and they have no More SA service grade specials.

For all of the people that say " no pictures or it didn't happen" I say shame you. For one reason that person may not own a camera or don't want to post any for whatever personal reason they may have. I myself do not like to post any pictures and if people don't believe me when I say I either own or bought a particular firearm then it's their problem as most everybody on here don't know me and that I do my best to be a man of my word.

The pictures or it didn't happen is really more aimed at humor than questioning the integrity of the original poster. It's humor and should be taken as such. Nobody is really obligated in any way, shape, form or manner to post pictures of new gun acquisitions. See my post #2 where a smiley face is included.

Anytime a member gets a new gun pictures are always a nice touch but certainly not required. With or without a picture or two I always feel happy for the poster who just received a new gun and I am sure that holds true for all the members.

I tend to post pictures but can certainly understand the views and appreciate the views of those who don't. Matter of fact when I do post images they link directly back to my own web so anyone who can do a DNS lookup can join me for morning coffee at my home. I don't worry about it but again can appreciate those who do.

Anyway, in my opinion it's humor and should be seen as such.

Just My Take

Question to OP -- I ordered 2 H&R in January for 2 of my sons, the third son gets and H&R I alreay owned -- did your H&R come with a original military stock or the CMP stamped stock?

The original stock is a deep red color -- hardwood.

The 2 I received this summer have a birch/beech stock stained red, but nowhere near as deep or nice as the original stock -- was kinda bummed but figured the boys will be happy with their presents down the road. Fortunetly my twin sons will get the matching M1 Garands, while the oldest get the better stock Garand.

Just wondering, thanks.

UK, i ordered a SA service grade right after christmas and it came with the "pumpkin" birch stock. these orange stocks are from Boyd's. many folks, myself included, think they're pretty ugly.

you can purchase a new walnut stock from Dupage Trading. it's the same new production walnut stock that CMP uses w/o the CMP stamp. it seems that demand has been so high, that CMP has had to purchase new production stocks from Boyd's and Dupage to keep up and it's luck of the draw which one you'll get.

Here's a pic of the CMP service grade H&R I got in Feb. After a cleaning and BLO on the wood, it looked new. Love the Greek red stock.

Below are pictured a few M1 Garand rifles. The upper rifle is a walnut stock while the below rifle is an original GI birch stock, the lower rifle being a SA 1954 manufacture with the original DoD cartouche on the stock. The birch stocks are commonly called the orange stocks.

Personally I like either. The lower stock was simply stripped and oiled, and no stain used on the wood.

The upper rifle for those who notice has NM sights and was built as a target rifle. Matter of fact the rifle is chambered in 7mm-08 Remington, a long way from the original 30-06 chambering. The later post Korean era is a 30-06 chambering. Both rifles are a pleasure to own and shoot which works for me.

The stock lumber is merely a matter of personal choice because it is all a matter of how the rifle shoots.

there's a big difference between the appearance of an original GI birch stock and the pumpkin wood of the boyds stocks that CMP is using. but yes, it's a matter of opinion, but a whole lot of us are of the opinion that they're ugly.

Simply put, there is NO place better to get an M1 Garand than CMP.

Congrats! I'm sure you will enjoy it. I have 2 from the CMP and have a small fund set aside for an IHC M1 from the CMP if they ever get around to releasing them. I look forward to your range report and pics.

congrats on the new toy.
they are heavy.
they are complicated.
they are loud.
they make that disconcerting PING! at the end of each clip(yes clip is the correct term for M1s)
but by gosh they sure are fun!
