combat/tactical knife question.

can anyone make recommendations for one with an oversized/upswept handguard? i'm not that specific on blade style, but i would prefer something that's partially serrated. the only thing i've found so far is this cqd (close quarter defense) mark v... but i'm not thrilled about them going for $250-$300



any input is appreciated. please no recommendations for a main gauche

One of the problems you're going to encounter is that the oversized forward swept handguards will typically come on either historical reproductions (like the main gauche) or on customs.

Tell something about what you want the knife for and what you want to do with it.

nevermas- i haven't seen one of those before... i'll have to check them out. thanks for the suggestion.

hso- if i tell you that you'll probably suggest a ka-bar, lol. i'll carry it when hunting, hiking, and possibly work at some point if/when i go to a unit where it's feasible. it wouldn't be my only fixed blade knife (though i have a lot more folders) but for some reason i've really taken a liking to the upswept guard, though not quite as large a a main gauche style guard. i'm sure it wouldn't be nearly as useful as i'd like to tell myself since i doubt i'm going to be in any knife fights anytime soon.

On a working or combat knife, those sharp pointy guards are much more likely to harm you or your equipment then the occasional Bad Guy you might meet up with every hundred years or so.

I hope you understand that forward facing guards are a hinderance on anything other than a fighter. They get in the way of any fine use of the blade.

What is the maximum price you're willing to pay? Price will be a factor since you're looking for a knife to use as a knife instead of a toy and few working knives use forward swept guards.

yeah, i've considered the possibility of snagging equipment and such, and less practical than my ka bar. realistically i know it won't be the most efficient, that's why i mentioned not being as useful as i'd like to tell myself, and not being in any knife fights as i'd be justified in using my firearm on/off duty against anything termed as a deadly weapon anyway. this would be more of a novelty for me, but i don't like buying something i'm not going to use either, so my novelties actually get used and don't collect dust... but it wouldn't be my primary. when i used it, i would maybe clean fish, whittle and other things. i'd prefer to stay under $200 but i may end up just using some gun money to go higher.

The Boker AF is about the only forward swept guard that I can think of any more in your price range.

Except it doesn't fit wesessiah's basic requirement for a forward swept guard (which he acknowledges as a personal preference instead of a practical consideration).

Try to find one of the Ontario Bagwell Bowies. Forward swept guards, great balance, quality product. Of course for what you can buy an Ontario Bagwell you can talk to custom makers about making one specifically to your design.

if you're budget is around $200 (u said that, right?) and the knife in your original post is $250 - $300, i'd say try and get that extra 50 or so. that is a beautiful piece. it has all the extra flare of a cheap fantasy blade, but looks like it's actually a high quality build. i can totally understand the desire for the upswept pointy gaurds. whether or not they're practical, they are definately cool

those bagwell bowies are interesting... looks like they're a little hard to find. i think i'm going to continue browsing those kit/custom websites.

yeah, i may end up just spending the extra money on that one... i really like that it's a-2 steel, since a lot of companies seem to be using cpm-154 and the other ones similar. just seems like they like to chip rather than roll.

i hate to admit this as i suppose i'm too old for video games, but my fascination came from trying to find out what knife krauser uses on resident evil 4. it was supposed to be inspired by that mark v, and a mercworx proeliator and the mark v really caught my eye. what can i say, i can't stay away from firearms/weapons even when it's not in real life.

For the record, Wes, I read somewhere recently that the average age of gamers these days is 33. I was momentarily surprised, but, then realized it made perfect sense with that generation having been in high school when a lot of the newest concept battle and fighting games really hit the scene.

I still play 'Black' once in a while on my old Ps2 and, from what I've seen advertised and heard of, there are even better games out now, by FAR.

The newest games out that utilize real-world weapons and gear blow me away with their first person perspective and attention to detail with the different weapons.

That level of realism puts those games in the realm of interest for even the biggest, and oldest, kids and has even brought many non-gamers out of the woodwork.

And, don't forget, the military and law enforcement now use virtual game-like simulations for many different training modules.

Ok, back to the knife thread.

wow, i never would have guessed the average gamer was that old. now that you mention it, we (i'm in law enforcement) do have those virtual interactive simulators for firearms training drills. i suppose i never thought of them as video games, but considering how far along video games have come, all they are is an expensive video game.
