Can you give this the occasional bump and run type update?

I wanted to keep tabs on this, but today is a 13 hour solid, 2 man short, no lunch shift. And there's no way to hear the radio over the shop noise.

I'm hoping she goes full on Yosemite Sam on that bunch of idiots.

Just finished her statement.

Been asked why little to no mention of Al Quaeda prior to 9/11 from the Bush admin.

"Other priorities, as did the Clinton administration, Korea etc"
"No drop off from the Clinton admin...done a lot of good work up til then."
"Quite cogniscent of this group"
Getting rid of OBL not end attacks from AQ (own words)

"Did you ever see since getting in to govt...any memo's discussing use of planes in terrorism?"
- Historical memo - no-one could have ever imagined (I could not have imagined)
- To best of her knowledge - never briefed on this possibility.
- Have to depend on intelligence agencies, assume they thought it was speculative
- Not in Aug 6th memo
- Not aware of 98/99 memos

(want more like this?)

Watching, but it is chopping in and out a lot.

Hmmmm instead of some of the stupid stuff Congress allogates money for, how about some for a C-span upgrade?

Try http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4693043

So far it is very biased and confrontational.

More statements than questions. Then they don't want her to address the the statements.

So far its pretty pitiful.

We love Mr. Clarke...Condi you're a lying Bi--- attitude thus far.

here goes

"Too much emphasis on Iraq?"

- Sophisticated attack - Bush also wondered about Iran
- Worry about follow-on attacks, Bush eager to get Wall Street going.
- Afghanistan map rolled out on table at Camp David
- Iraq raised by Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz, no other advisers suggested Iraq
- Iraq later 'contingency plan' on Bush's worries, Iraq "take advantage...in case they were behind 9/11"

R Clark writes that Bush pushed him for Iraq - 9/11 link

- Doesn't remember conversation - Clark was pulled aside
- Not surprising Bush asked this
- Doubts that he pushed for link

Concerns about the pace of policy making in summer 2001. Speed of process. Several cites from others about this. Rice herself focussed on terrorism and rogue regimes. 100 meetings between national security principals before meeting on terrorism - Chairman

- Woodward - question to Bush was "want to kill OBL before 9/11". President was worried about talking about pre-9/11 attempts to kill (trick question from woodward?) Bush - 'bring him to justice...no sense of emergency'. [condi] - "whose blood was boiling before 9/11"
- We show 33 meetings, not 100. 3 of those cover issues of terrorism (not relating to A-Q)
- Parallel tracks, continuing Clinton admin under same structures. Takes time to get more 'strategic' - takes some time partic. when takes time to 'get your people on board'
- Inc counter-terrorism funding, pushed along 'Predator'
- Had we moved along our original memo's from intel. we might have gone of course before 9/11

Unable to protect our people. Hindsight you say 'better information about the threats would have been single most important thing to have done'

- Take oath of office seriously - asked many times what more I could have done
- Inability to 'connect the dots' was structural.
- Legal impediments - keep FBI and CIA from functioning but seem between 'internal and external intel.'
- History of 'allergy' to domestic intelligence. Homeland Security was important step.

Sentence on p9. 'we must address the source of the problem'. Worried about threat over long period of time. Some muslims hate us, don't like that economic prosperity has passed them by, hate modernisation - how do we address this source?

- Issues that you address cannot be covered 'on our watch'
- US has long looked the other way on lack of freedom and lack of indiv freedom in Mid East. No longer to be stance.
- There are reformist trends, Bahrain, Egypt.
- Slow process, building a democracy is slow ("when founding fathers said 'we the people' they didn't mean me" (spunky))
- Change the nature of the mid east in long run - why Iraq is so important, they will succeed and a big change will have been made in Mid East.

Aug 6th 2001 PDB. Mar 19th 2004 statement says Aug 2001 PDV was CIA source. Directed by the President is the claim. High threat level, as Clark says intel community under discussion in summer 2001. Rice acknowledges that Clark said AQ cells were in US - did you tell the president?

- It is important to cover...
- Did you tell the president? - applause
- Clark had told me in a memo, line or two, that AQ cells were there. Thought the FBI were dealing with it, 70 field investigations under way
- Don't remember discussing it with President
- Thank you. Do you recall title of Aug 6th 2001 PDB memo?
-"Bin Laden to attack in US?" Historical info, no warning of any coming attack
You knew by Aug 2001 of AQ involvement in earlier WTC attempt. Knew of attempt to blow up airport. Cells in Brooklyn...support system in US. Pattern of suspicious activity indicating hijacking leading up to Aug 6th PDB. Preparations consistent with hijackings in US
- Will read it to you.
- Pleased to see it declassified in full applause
- You've seen it
- It's still classified
- Long section, speculative, on what OBL wanted to do. Discussion on hijackings to free (Blind Sheikh?)
- Nothing reassuring in that PDB
- No, but nothing in this memo that suggested an attack was coming. Not a threat report.
- Agreed there were no specifics
- No. Measures in place, country had taken steps that it could.
- Have explored that. Will continue to do so. Not with pres. Aug 6th. Was the pres moved by the PDB to meet with anyone?
- pres was told this was historical info, nothing actionable in this. Pres knew that CIA and FBI were pursuing this issue.
- Do you believe that had the pres had taken action to make sure FBI/CIA liason . CIA knew of two AQ operatives that took part in 9/11 were in US. Moussai (?) - Clark was not even made aware of him, his flight training. Would any of this 'interrupt the plotters'?
- Given the level of threat we were doing what we thought we could. No threat report of substance. CIA Dir. met with pres. freq. Not a good analysis. We had a structural problem in the US (repeats this)
Did the Pres meet with CIA dir. between Aug 6th and Sept 11th?
- I'm not aware

Tired fingers now. That was the fiery bit at the end there. Still going.

What I found particularly funny on the radio was the applause some group puts in whenever they think that a Clintonite Democrat scores a hit on her.

They applaud, and then Rice lays out the facts and evicerates the point.

Pathetic, absolutely pathetic.

To be honest guys she seemed a little 'on the backfoot' whilst I was transcribing that. I don't think it has been a wonderful performance from her, not bad though.

What is the MI5 issue?

We love Mr. Clarke...Condi you're a lying Bi--- attitude.

We in hind site can see a clear picture...see the FBI had this the CIA had that...why didn't you put this all together. Where was your crystal ball woman. :cuss:

Sorry folks, but she sure looks like she's on the defense to me at times. I was really hoping for her to hit a home run, but she's barely holding her own. She is feisty though, I'll give her that.

I love the way these damn dems think that Bush's administration should have fixed problems in a few months, that their boy Clinton didn't address in 8 years.

Sorry folks, but she sure looks like she's on the defense to me at times.

Only in appearance. Aggressiveness toward the witness causes the witness to have to be defensive in posture not in the content of their response. I've been there, done that.

Just look at Clarkes testimony where he appeared to be on the offensive because they were so nice to him BUT his testimony was full of contradictions.

They hope their tone toward her will influence the general public.

Appearances...Appearances.

Here's my prediction:

If she does well today you will see didly-squat on the news tonight.

If they hammer on her, and she slips even slightly, they'll devote a full 5 minutes of a 30 minute broadcast to her "lies" or "inconsistencies".

Scary thing is, you all know I'm right, and most of the country questions nothing that comes from the T.V. screen that is called "news".

Hmmmm instead of some of the stupid stuff Congress allogates money for, how about some for a C-span upgrade?

C-Span isn't government funded, it's paid for by cable TV companies as a public service. If Congress were going to do anything to improve it, I'd ask 'em to end the restrictions on where the cameras get pointed. Maybe just blanket the chamber with webcams.

Dem's on the commission want to 'talk' and 'pontificate' not listen. She is cutting them to pieces with logic---------but lib's do not understand nor even rocognize logic!

She's doing much better now. Too bad the only thing we will see on the news, are the times she was being badgered, and looked on the defense. Glad I have Fox on, and not one of the major networks.

Condi shouldn't you have gone to the regional offices and made sure they had the info that the central office was supposed to pass down. Hmmm? isn't it your job to know that they don't have that info?

Shouldn't you resign since they didn't pass down the information efficiently.

Nonsense.

No matter how she does, this public inquisition is doing a mountain of good for our enemies.

If the enemy did not have it before, it now has a roadmap to the inner-workings of the executive branch regarding counter-terrorism and intelligence in general.

If the goal was to have the sheeple feel better, then they have failed.

If the goal was a partisan attack, then they succeeded.

If the goal was to find the "truth," then they have failed.

If the goal was to bolster the terrorists and enemy states, theny they have succeeded in spades.

"No matter how she does, this public inquisition is doing a mountain of good for our enemies. "

Hear, hear. I find it hard to believe that even the Democrats think that someone in the US government is to blame for these terrorist attacks.

Tim

She really brought the hammer down on Bob Kerrey.

I haven't seen a grown man make the gaping "fish face" in a long time.
