Just curious to see how much per round people are reloading 308 and 30-06. The ammo will be used for target for now. I am looking at buying a new M1 Garand and unfortunately need to consider the cost of the ammo. Thanks for the info.

You will get about 150 rounds per lb of powder ($8 to $12/lb).
Primers are around $2/100
Cases should be free from previous manufactured ammo or figure $30/100 spread over 5 loadings would be 6 cents.
Bullets - Sierra 168gr Match are around $25 to $30/100 or 25 cents each. Winchester bulk FMJ 145gr is about 1/2 that or about 12 cents each.

Should run you between 25 to 45 cents per round depending upon how good a shopper you are and what level of ammo you want to put together. That's $5 to $10 a box of 20. Pretty hard to beat those prices with factory loads.

About 35¢ for match stuff using Noslers. 30-06 would be maybe 45¢ each. Buy in big quantities.

where do you buy powder $8 to $12?

Powder has gone up a bit but if you buy surplus powders you can still get it at less than $12 a lb. and new commercial AA powders can be had closer to $15/lb in 8lb jugs.

.308 for me:

$.05 - 144gr FMJBT milsurp bullet
.07 - Milsurp IMR4895 @ $10 per #
.02 - Winchester WLR primer
-----
$.14 per round not counting the LC Match brass that I got cheap.

It's been years since I've bought a 1lb can of powder. Buy 8lbs for $100-130 these days. Find someone else to split the hazmat with.

Since I reload for accuracy, cost isn't a factor. If you want to go cheap, you can get pulled bullets and military pull down powder and reload for a fairly low cost. Start loading with Lapua brass, scenars and VihtaVuori powder and cost runs up fast.

Since I had to restock all my components recently my prices are current and not from several years ago when a lot of shooters smartly bought bulk and can now build their rounds for half what I can. :banghead:

I don't load for the .308 but I do load for the 30-06 and here is what I can load them for:
Powder - $19.99 a lb. (usually 4895 or 4350)
Primers - $22/1000 (usually Winchester LR)
Bullets - $24/100 (Sierra 168gr and 175gr MatchKing HPBT)
Cases - Free - I have many from shooting Factory ammo and saving them for years even before I started reloading for the 30-06, mostly Federal and Winchester.

Using the above component prices I can reload 30-06 rounds for $0.41 a round, $8.20 a box of 20. At those prices I can afford to shoot. If I had to pay the current Retail prices of $25 to $45 a box it would be a different story.

Where do you buy 144gr FMJBT milsurp bullet for .05 cents?

You don't anymore, but 2 years ago, you could buy 3,000 of them for $150. Same thing on surplus powder; 3 years ago, you could buy surplus IMR4895 powder for $78. It's kind of like the stock market, you've got to see the way things are trending and get in while the price is low.
