Here is the response I got from Sen McCain.
Not what I was hoping for at all. I highlighted the troubling part.
Sorry if this response has been posted by others.

Thank you for contacting my office regarding the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and its impact on federal gun legislation. I appreciate your taking the time to share your views with me.

As you know, on December 14, 2012, a mentally unstable gunman committed a senseless atrocity by murdering twenty students and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut. While many Americans continue to try to rationalize this tragedy it remains clear that the inhumane and depraved actions of this individual gunman appear to be motivated solely by his extremely disturbed mental state.

On January 16, 2013, President Obama and his administration introduced a twenty-three point plan which lays out both executive and legislative proposals that would attempt to prevent future violence. As the details of the President’s proposals become more clear, I look forward to reviewing them, and working with my colleagues to find sensible solutions that respect the Second Amendment but also help us prevent these type of horrific events from ever happening again.

While I am an unwavering supporter of the Second Amendment, please know that I will seriously consider all reasonable public safety legislation that comes before the Senate.
Thank you once again for contacting my office. Please do not hesitate to do so on this or any other issue of concern.

Sincerely,
John McCain
United States Senator

JM/JT

Not sure how much to take out of this but I recently read a book that contained a lot of editorial content from his daughter Meagan. She obviously learned most of her positions at his side growing up.

She made a huge deal about how strongly she supports the 2nd Amendment, how many guns she and her family have and how much they love shooting, even about the AR-15 as America's rifle -- and then went straight into a rant about how no citizen needs mags larger than 10 rounds and how she absolutely would support a ban on them!

And this book was published long before Sandy Hook, so that was just her heartfelt belief prior to the recent unpleasantness.

If her opinions are a reflection of her dad's, and I would absolutely assume they are in this case, the McCains are NOT "our" people.

No citizen NEEDS to communicate on the internet, or curse, or speak openly about their religion. I didn't think our rights were predicated on NEED. I counted McCain out a long time ago.

Personaly, I don't see that McCain said anything of value responding to you either way. The Senate is broken and dysfunctional, at best, under Harry Ried.

The point that you took time to expess your opinion to him probably weights more than any hog-wash you might get back. I would pay it no mind, and just keep at what you are doing.

Remember, the Senator may or may not have actually read your letter; as my guess most are cherry-picked by staffers before they would be seen by a congressman/senator. The intinals at the bottom of the letter, JM/JT, appear to be standard protocall meaning that JT responded to you for JM.

John McCain has always been a very soft pro-gun vote. Unless a more conservative candidate threatens him in a primary fight, he will continue to be tepid in his support of the Second Amendment.

Authoritarians are authoritarians no matter what side of the 'aisle' they fall on.

RINO would be the appropriate name for Mr. McCain. No one would mistake him for a conservative though.

McCain voted agains the AWB.
The last time?
Not sure he will should it come up again.
I'm pretty sure on any given day, he isn't sure where he stands on anything.
Of course, if you don't like his answer today, please come back and check again tomorrow.

All Congress persons are political animals and will vote for whatever feathers their own nest best. Generally, if they say yes they mean no and if they say they will they won't and vice versa. They are the the most efficient manure spreaders ever devised.

The two have some ideological differences for sure.

Using new labels:

I would say John is a moderate conservative/liberal conservative while Meagan is more of a progressive republican.

Same sex marriage is one difference for example.

McCain has consistently voted against an AWB and for extending NICS checks. He has never had a vote on just a magazine ban so I am not sure of his position on that.

Didnt Mcain co-sponsor the NDAA? The part about indeffinate detainment of US citizens? If My memory is wrong then by all means i apolagize, but I expect more from a former POW.

McCain is as fine of an American as exists today. I don't have to agree with every thing every politician says to completely respect them.

Just because he strongly considers any legislation on a given topic doesn't mean he is about to agree with it and vote for it.

I don't trust him entirely, but I won't throw him under the bus based on that one remark.

On the fence now. I supported McCain, but thought his wife's choice of Palin suspect, but John supported her.

Don't know if I'll turn my back on him yet; waiting for a sign, soon.

My dad and I ran into McCain in an airport once when I was a kid. I had no idea who he was, but my dad recognized him immediately.

McCain the politician has turned my stomach for a long time now.

Ahhhh....a non-descript response which doesn't take any particular stand.

This is a sign of political posturing, whether used by a politician or someone else.

The only thing he said in it which would be considered "positive" was "I am an unwavering supporter of the Second Amendment".

However, he qualified that by prefacing it with the word "While..." and then added on distracting wording about "public safety" afterwards.

In otherwords, the grammar of his statement contradicts the word "unwavering".

Senator McCain is thus subject to change with the political winds, not having a firm principle he is willing to put forth as something he stands by.

You may therefore be able to influence him...but you cannot rely on him. Most especially, you cannot rely on him in terms of a "no compromise" supporter of the RKBA.

I have never considered McCain a conservative, and I would not count on him standing with us here. All we can do is put pressure on him and hope.

I really believe the Republicans could have won in 2008 if he had taken a stronger conservative stand and had any personality at all.

The good news here is he doesn't have to win a popularity contest, just vote pro gun. Maybe he will, but I would not bet my last dollar on it. Not even my first dollar.

Doesn't matter though, as we need to pressure everybody who has a chance to vote our way.

McCain

I thank McCain for his service to America.
I voted for him because was the only candidate with a chance against obama.
I lost respect for him when he conceded the election a month before it even took place by stating we had nothing to fear with barack obama in the white house.
He did not know his adversary then and he still doesn't recognize him now. Pressure all we can but don't count on his support.
