CRKT copy of the Graham Razel

Like Hso, I picked up a pocket stubby. I've been pretty darn pleased in using this thing at work (agricultural) for cutting hose, scraping, prying, and other abuses that a knife with a fine point shouldn't be subjected to. It did come sharp, as The Tourist described. It's quite a bit smaller than it looks in pictures, which is nice.

My only gripe is the rather bulky, shoddy, kydex sheath that it came with (if you've got one, you know what I'm talking about). Anyone have suggestions on somewhere to have a decent piece of leather made for this thing?

Regards,

U

a decent piece of leather

Just call Josh at Graham Brother Knives and ask for a leather sheath that fits a Stubby. My CRKT Ringed Razel fits my Graham sheath like it was expressly made for it.

BTW, tell Josh how you want the clip attached! I have mine affixed for inside the right pocket carry. He can add it as you like.

Is the EOD Robotics Breacher bar a razel knock off??
I wouldn't say so. There is the Razel and the MAK and the Wilson COP tool (Which I saw was being produced by Boker, should be interesting) and the EOD at the bottom. Ontario also makes a blunt ended machete with a 10" blade.
I guess it is a trend for blunt ended knives that are prybar-ish.

You may indeed be right. But I've been searching for quite some time to find a tool that does work without me worrying about it all of the time.

I'd pack either the Graham or the CRKT and a clean pair of socks and go to Sturgis. I'd worry more about drunks in cages than my knife.

You might laugh at the comments that Tom Hanks made in Forest Gump. But upon finding out he's independently wealthy, Gump remarks, "One less thing to worry about."

A decent truck, an oil tight motorcycle, a dependable knife, comfortable jeans, long naps and enjoyable work have been my goals since I was a teenager.

For me, the Razel is the end of a trend from which I couldn't escape.

Tourist,

Ever get any hands on time with the largest version of the Razel? I think it's the SS7 or something like that. I've been thinking about picking one up but can't find any in stock to handle around my parts. The quality on the whole Razel line looks top notch.

Tourist - What kind of sheath are you using for your Ringed Razel? It looks like an interesting knife, but the sheath from the CRKT site looks like it leave a BUNCH of the handle exposed. Deep pocket carry with a clip seems like it would be good if it's not too big.

No, I have not. However, my supplier carries the CRKT Graham line, and I have purchased their version of the SS3 which they call the 2012. So, technically, I'm a reseller of the longer version, as well. I'll check price/availability with them during my next order.

Josh made me a leather sheath. Yes, it does leave a good portion of the handle and ring above the pocket line.

I sort of like that. If the knife sat any lower inside the pocket, it would dig in the top of my thigh when seated.

I use the Graham leather sheath for both my Graham and the CRKT version. They are identical in size and shape. I would carry the kydex version if I was going out into the slop.

Man. A CRKT group buy would be awesome. *cough cough*

The good news is...

Duh. That's right, I am a reseller. I have access to a 24/7 website page!

Yes, I can sell a CRKT SS7. Not today, they're out of stock...

Tourist,

On your suggestion I checked out the Graham brothers website for a sheath. However, after checking out their "how to" page, I decided to just give it a go myself. I wanted something that would basically just cover the blade, for pocket carry (inside front pocket, or side pocket on Carharts).

Using the Graham's instructions, this is what I ended up with - compared next to the kydex sheath that my stubby was supplied with (attached). It's just some latigo scraps, leather epoxy, and a good coat of snow-seal.

Thanks to the Grahams for being good enough to provide a decent walk through. Sorry, the pictures turned out pretty lousy, and shrinking them didn't help (dial-up limited, eh..).

Regards,

U

Hopefully that sheath has a welt of some sort. A sheath without a proper welt in pocket carry is an accident waiting to happen.

ask any sheath maker , none that I know of will make a sheath without a welt.

Upriver, I'm glad a solution was worked out.

However, the one thing I've found out about honest craftsmen is that they will gladly help clients.

It's nice to help folks and it's good for busness.

You just told thousands of THR members and lurkers about a great company and folks of Graham Brothers. You cannot buy that kind of advertising or build that type of loyalty.

I told Josh I want the first folder he makes--and he hasn't even taken delivery of the milling machine to make it!

Indeed , the Graham Bros are a couple of great guys , they shared all kinds of tips and tricks with me in Vegas. They both spent time with uncle Kit learning folders so you just know they are going to be awesome !

Well, JTW,

I have to confess I'm not actually sure what you mean - if you're referring to an extra piece of leather in the stitch area, then no, I didn't do that. Is it wear of the cutting edge on the inside of the sheath that could potentially be dangerous? Could you elaborate?

I don't plan to draw the knife leaving the sheath behind in the pocket, it's more of just a pocket protector so I don't have to have it clipped on somewhere.

Regards,

U

Yea, the welt normally keeps the knife from cutting right through the stitching and into your leg. I haven't seen a Razel so I don't know if it will do that or not.

I sure may have to get one though!

Well,

I have to admit it's not half as nice as the skinner I got from you (which I've never had the decency to post a picture of) but I picked it up as a secondary tool for work, to keep myself from breaking the edge off the knife I actually cut things with. I'm running out of pockets to cram a cold chisel and screwdriver into - we're good at breaking stuff on the clock.

It did come sharp, though - I took a piece of my thumb print off by accident, just a paper thin slice.

Enjoying the heck out of the skinner BTW - trying hard not to "lose" it to a friend.

Regards,

U

Valkman, this is a picture of the leather sheath Josh made for my Razel SS3. From this view, the knife would be inserted with the blade edge down.

If this view doesn't help, tell me what angle might be of help.

TT,

That looks pretty close to what I ended up with, except I left out the piece of leather that retains the clip and went with a slightly lighter piece for the back. Well, and mine's not finished as nicely, either.

If there's extra leather there for a welt, I'm missing it. There's no question that the Lifter's sheath that came with Valkman's small skinner is more stoutly constructed than what I put together.

Regards,

U

the welt prevents the edge from cutting between the two pieces of leather and cutting the thread.

add bulk to the sheath , but much more security.

Looks nicely done ... I am sure if Josh is making them like that he has a reason. Those graham bro's know their stuff.

It looks like the nicely done shaping of the leather stops the blade before it can get to the stitching - nice.

Upriver, I have more. :D I even have one done and ready!

CRKT knives are great knives. I collect knives and have several of them. The are durable, hold an edge, hold together and are tough.

So is that a no? I would like to get the genuine one but if I had that kind of cash to drop on a knife, I would be ordering one of Valkman's Fighters.
