Crocodile Kills Man in Australia DARWIN, Australia - A crocodile killed a 22-year-old man and then kept his body in its jaws while his two friends watched in horror from a nearby tree.
Shaun Blowers and Ashley McGough, both 19, recounted on Tuesday how the reptile snatched Brett Mann at Finniss River, which cuts through a flooded tropical wilderness about 50 miles southwest of Darwin in the Northern Territory on Sunday.
Blowers said the 13-foot saltwater crocodile also lunged at them, but they scrambled up a tree in the swollen stream. A police search party found them still in the tree 22 hours later.
The three friends had been riding quad bikes along a muddy trail, and stopped by the river to bathe.
Mann was swept away by a strong current. As his friends swam out to help, he was taken by a crocodile that had been lurking in the waters.
"We both jumped in and swam after him and we got in front of him and were leading him back to the bank," Blowers said. "I went past the croc. I didn't see it. Ashley screamed out `croc, croc'... we just swam to the nearest tree and straight up we went.
"We were looking around for Brett (but) didn't hear a thing, didn't hear a scream, no splashing or anything," he said.
"Two minutes later the croc brought Brett to the surface and pretty much showed him off to us and off he swam.
"Five minutes later he was back stalking the tree around us. He just hung around us all night and pretty much all the next morning."
A police helicopter took the two survivors to Darwin, where they were treated for shock and exposure.
Authorities Tuesday searched the river for Mann's remains and for the man-eating crocodile.
Saltwater crocodiles are among the world's largest reptiles. They became a protected species in 1971 after they were nearly wiped out over the last century. There are now an estimated 100,000 saltwater crocs and there have been growing calls for a reintroduction of limited hunting.
Last year a crocodile killed a 25-year-old German woman as she swam in the Northern Territories Kakadu Park

Now they know WHY they were nearly wiped out over the last century. They eat anything (or anyone) that they come across. And you're not allowed to touch 'em? C'mon now!!! I think they had it right the first time.

I think it was actually their friend who went to Darwin, to collect his award.

Not 100% sure, but i think salt water crocs are the only animal in the world who will hunt man.

All the more reason for politicians to take up bathing in streams.

I imagine it's pretty rough on the Baptists there as well. :D

Good Shooting

Crocs are protected. Humans are disarmed. So now the crocs are killing more humans than the humans are killing crocs.

And that's the way the Australian Gov't likes things?

Gun rights aside, anyone who ventures within 6 feet of a body of water in the salt water/tropical regions of northern Australia is pretty much asking for it. Especially if they live in those areas.

Plenty of bathers and women washing clothes in Indian rivers are lost to "saltys." They can't thin that population fast enough to cause concern though.:scrutiny:

Yes....but it's a very strange government....

"And that's the way the Australian Gov't likes things?"

With total preservationists pulling on one side and nitwit hoplophobes such as P.M. John Howard running the show, things can get downright discouraging sometimes.:scrutiny:

Deadman has it right:

A young Aboriginal girl was attacked recently in a very shallow estuary near Darwin...her uncle ran out into the water and speared the croc, which dropped the child and fled.

It's a very good idea to stay well back from even small coastal waterways in northern Australia.:what:

Bon appetit

I remember the Indian version Mr C. Rocodile.

That's why quite some households still have an old .303 rifle over there, even if the country seems disarmed (actually, Indian gun laws are not THAT bad).

Oh my gosh! They allow people to have spears down there ....?

What if some nut got a hold of one and started spearing people? They should ban spears, just for the children. (and crocodiles:rolleyes: )

Seriously, how did Australia get to where it is today?

Seems like, with its origins as a penal colony and the remote and rugged location, that it would be the last "FreeHold" on earth. Is the influence of Mama Liz just that overpowering?

Australian reptiles and crocodiles....

"I wonder when the people of Australia will rise up and throw that moron out of office."
************************************************************

HBK, I know this may seem defeatist, but everyone outside John Howard's party would be worse than he is.:banghead:

The crocodiles are just trying to eat, but little Johnnie is in for the control!

Only for 'traditional' purposes...culture and all that. Many of the aboriginal camp disputes are settled with kitchen knives, axes and hatchets:eek:, with water pipes and bottles also popular.

Tallpine, that's a good question!

Rural Australians generally don't seem to be quite so excitable on such hot button issues as 'gun control' as do the city-dwellers...but urban and small city inhabitants make up nearly 80% of Australia's population.

The penal colony heritage meant that firearms possession was relatively more controlled here from an early date than in the U.S., but only recently has the government, urban elite and media all jumped on to the 'ban the gun' bandwagon. I don't think the Royals have much to do with this particular issue, although some of those fanatical British anti-gun groups no doubt contribute policy and advice.

Australia certainly is a shooter's paradise in terms of wide open spaces and huge numbers of feral animals that must be controlled...but the powers-that-be seem determined to end private ownership of firearms.:scrutiny:

Get a grip!

No! Not that grip!

Mann, through ignorance, stupidity, or both, went swimming in a flood swollen river, behavior proven fatal uncounted times throughout the world. Mann, through ignorance, stupidity, or both, made him self available to a predator, behavior proven fatal uncounted times throughout the world. A horrible example of how gun control has endangered the Aussies? Hardly! Just what firearm should Mann have had in his possession while bathing in the river on a hot summer day in the tropics? Mann’s mates, Blowers and McGough, swam to Mann’s rescue. Just what firearm should they have taken with them into the river?

As for the croc, my casual search did not turn up a map good enough to sggest that Mann, Blowers, and McGough were in an area sufficiently populated for predator control. Mann’s death is a tragedy, it is probably not cause for the wholesale slaughter or relocation of crocodiles.

An animal should never have a greater value than a human IMO....They should eradicate them again, near urban areas.....
In my state the Mt. Lion hunts men .......but it will take more tradgedy before the liberal ninnies get a clue..............

Saltwater crocs ("buwaya") are fairly common in many parts of my country.
Not only will they hunt man, they seem to make sport of it.
Those kids in Australia have my sympathy

In the water with a hostile croc, there's simply no contest.
Even on land, tropical SW crocs can outrun people over short distances, hence the need to be scanning at least 15 meters ahead on sandflats and near riverbanks.

It's easy to spot baskers or cruisers, sure...
But it can be next to impossible to "just" spot a hunting croc, even onshore, even in broad daylight --unless you are ACTIVELY on the lookout for one. I once failed to spot a 28 footer just fifteen feet away while surveying mangroves. --fortunately, it wasn't warmed up yet and so would only hiss and snap from where it lay. A week later it was caught and relocated.

I didn't own a firearm back then, and I honestly cannot think of a firearm I could have carried that would have saved me, had the croc turned on me then.

Hey Horge. Interesting post. But seeing your sig I have this vision of someone trying to fend off a 28 foot Croc with a .380.

So I guess we can swap the "Best gun for bears" threads out for "Best gun for Humongous Crocs" threads.

If he would have had a gun on him, he could've shot the Croc. If he was in the water, one of his friend's could have shot it.

Howard's party is the most conservative y'all have? It might take a full scale REVOLT to get your country back.
