I saw a couple of CZ 52's in my local shop in decent shape for $179
they are chambered for 7.62x25. Is this a good deal?

How are they on relaiblilty and quality?

Is ammo availability a problem?

I've got a C&R, would this be worth looking online for a better deal?

re: CZ52

My CZ52 was purchased in excellent condition for $125. I went to www.makarov.com and accessorized it (probably have at least another $125 in it).

The cartridge is hot, loud, and provides a big flash. It's an attention getter at the range, especially indoors.

The CZ52 is prone to brittle firing pins which break. No dry firing without a good snap cap!

The roller-barrel design is unique, interesting to observe it's behavior when you take it down for cleaning. Take down can be an adventure if you don't have the special takedown tool (takes some getting used to with the tool).

The trigger is 12# and kind of gritty, and I've never mastered the art of shooting it well, although I hear some have, and those who do brag of impressive groups out to 100 yards. I may try some bench shooting with it to see what the gun is capable without the handicap of this gentleman as the shooter. It's a little heavy, but it can be a lot of fun.

As to your specific questions:

I think you may be able to do a little better on price on-line, but having the opportunity to inspect it locally is a plus, especially with this type of item.

Using factory ammo (I use S&B from CTD or Cabelas or Natchez), I've never had any serious problems with jamming...I think 1 or 2 since I bought it. You probably will want to replace the grips, I also went with the stiffer recoil spring as recommended at www.makarov.com. Mine is stamped as being 1953 vintage and the finish exceeds that of some of my modern guns.

As for ammo', I think on the whole you may do better in terms of availability AND PRICE on-line...I'd recommend you stick with S&B and stay away from surplus stuff.

Bottom line, I view my CZ-52 as a shootable collectable. It's lots of fun, gets some attention, and challenges me like no other handgun does...I hope to shoot a decent group with this piece before I head on to the hereafter :).

Good luck and safe shooting,

CZ52'

try cdnn investments, their most recent catalog shows cz52's for a similar price, and i've never heard anyone say anything negative about what comes from cdnn.

they have a supply of spare magazines for the cz52 as well.

my cz gave me some hiccups when i took it to the range, and i need to get those resolved. could have been the ammo, but it could also use a replacement of as much of the innards as possible. i bought it sight unseen and have no real clue as to its pedigree. could have 50000 rounds through it for all i know. i may wind up buying another one in tiptop shape, just for grins.
but that chambering is rather unique, isnt it?

You can get the CZ-52 with your C&R. Check out AIM Surplus www.aimsurplus.com as they have them for $109.95 in Very-Good to Excellent Condition, add $10 for handpick.

GET IT!!! You will have FUN with this! Check out my "CZ Range Report" thread. This thing shoots through steel like crap through a goose!

For what these CZ52s cost, you can't go wrong. They wouldn't be my first pick if I could only own one gun, but for the money, it is a great toy. If you buy one for $109, you will be thrilled to tears at what you get for that kind of money.
I have two of them. Paid less than $100 each. One came with an extra 9mm Luger barrel. Both guns run great. Both exhibit decent accuracy. One is very nicely finished. The grips are really ugly, but get some Hogues. They make some very nice exotic hardwood grips for the CZ52. Ammo and mags are readily available.

Thanks everyone for the great information.

I'm mailing off my C&R tomorrow and getting me a couple.

I feel like a kid at Christmas :D
