I picked up a Daewoo Dr-200 a while ago for $600. Had never heard of them before, but was taken with it.

Never cared for the thumb hole stock, so i went ahead and made some changed. First pic is the original condition as imported (as i got it) and after.

Added the rail and Vortex SPARC.

Pistol grip styled after the the K2 and the Ace stock.

Removed the fake flash hider and added a new one styled after the original.

The flash hider was a pain to remove, as it was high temp silver soldered on.

I think the gun looks and feels a lot better.

My uncle has one of those, we were messing with it at the range last month. Interesting gun, kinda like a AR and a FAL mashed together. Weird controls and sight adjustments though.

I sold a bunch of these in my shop and today I really don't know why I didn't hold onto to one for myself. The are accurate, very reliable, utilize a great QD scope mount system, have more than decent ergonomics (especially when the TH stock is replaced), and are reasonably priced. AR magazines make then even more sensible. They are a workhorse in an arena filled with finicky thoroughbreds.

Make sure you do a range report!

I put one of the 90 safety levers on from http://azex.co/Home_Page.html and that makes a huge difference when engaging/disengaging the safety. He also does some other add ons for the Daewoo.

I actually like the thumb hole stock so I switched back to it. The aftermarket stock that was on it when I purchased it was not comfortable at all. Looks like there are some more choices out there now though.

Rifle looks good, looking forward to what you think once you get it to the range. I love mine, kept it over a Ruger SR556.

Bought one of these at a show this weekend. Actually like the TH stock, but already have parts on order for a folding stock. Now I'm just trying to decide on an optics choice.

I believe the original neutered features were for 922(r) compliance, not AWB compliance. If you don't know for a fact that you did a 922(r) compliant modification, you might want to look that up right away.

All set with 922R. All parts added were us made and with the other internal parts changed and us mags I am all set.

My understanding were some were imported like the original Korean military K2, but Uncle Bill changed the import requirements, hence the neutered gun. But then they were banned all together.

To bad no domestic maker of AR-15 would make a copy of the gun. Its a interesting design. Not sure if Daewoo has some patent on it, so no one can make a domestic copy.

Great, glad to hear it.

That's my understanding as well - a few were imported in "evil" configuration, many more like yours started out.

I've handled a couple of them and I agree it's a pretty cool design. I think what happened is that there was not seen to be much market for them during the 1990s, and after 2004 all the domestic no-ban guns were more appealing, along with the newer piston designs. It also could be that some US official told Daewoo to stop importing them if Daewoo wanted fair treatment for some unrelated industry like cars. Who knows.

Pre-922r Daewoos (imported before 1989) are marked AR-100, AR-110C, K-1, K-2, MAX I & MAX II.
Post-922r Daewoos (imported after 1990) are marked DR-200 & DR-300.

Since 1980, Daewoo Precision made the Daewoo firearms and was part of the Daewoo Group.
In 1999, the Daewoo Group collapsed (they could not recover from the Asian finacial market crashed of 1998) and was dismantled by the ROK Gov.
As part of the dismantling/reorganization, Daewoo Precision Industries became a seperate corporation.
Due to the reogranization/consoldiation, importation of Daewoo firearms to the USA was halted by Daewoo Precision Industries.
In 2006, Daewoo Precision Industries was acquired by S&T Holdings and renamed S&T Daewoo.
As part of the acquition/reogranization/consolidation, S&T Daewoo completely discontinued all civilian market firearms.
S&T Daewoo is currently making firearms for Gov/Mil only.

I've always had a degree of fascination with these. Get us a range report when you get the chance.

My younger nephew almost had a heart attack when I opened up the gun cabinet and pulled out my AR-100.
Of course, him having just finished his service in the RoK army might have had a little to do with it.

I'm not so sure it didn't strngly influwncw Robinson Arms XCR. JMHO

As someone said, a Daewoo style upper on an AR lower might be an idea...

Daewoo rifle parts. com is down right now, but it is another source for mods. I love my DR 200 and wish I would have picked up a 300. I've shot a adams arms piston AR, a chinese ak in .223, a fnc, a armaline (new) ar 18 and an FN 2000 and nothing comes close to my DR 200. I spent a couple of decades with the AR-platform professionally, but like the woo better. Once you do a few little mods you won't put it down. I too wish there was some way to get an american made version. I'd have a stable of them. Mine is very accurate as well. I've also come to believe that the 18 inch barrel is the "just right" for 5.56. Long enough to get the extra velocity, but short enough to be handy. Wish I would have known they'd be so scarce or I would have bought every one I could get for $500 back in 1996.

WOO'd love to hear about see your mods.

I have two of them right now and am really considering sending one off to AZEX to SBR it. (Which is why I bought the second one in the first place.)

Amen. I bought my first one in 1995 for $450...with cheap 4-12x40 scope, rings & case! Sadly had to trade it for a laptop when times were tough. That said, I replaced it & bought a spare since then.

Now the question I have is...has anyone found a way to stop them from trashing the ejected brass???? Not throwing it a mile and a half away???? Woudn't mind being able to reload it.

The ROK troops are carrying these in Afghanistan. I see them every day at Bagram in the DEFAC and at the PX.

Did you ever get a chance to talk to them, to see what they think of them.

I consider the Daewoo the first Piston AR.

I've had a DR200 and they are a good gun ... a lot of people abandon them over parts concerns but now Daewooparts.com has remedied that problem with the exception of the bolt which really isn't a problem ... the rifle is completely reliable but not as accurate as most AR's ... probably due to the piston vibrations.

Beware the DR-300, they have a common problem of shearing the lugs off the bolt. I bought one thinking I could come up with a bolt but after 2 years it didn't happen. I looked at modifying an AR bolt after consulting with a machinist decided it wouldn't be safe ... looked at making a new bolt carrier that could use a 7.62x39 AR bolt but it was cost prohibitive.

I finally built an AR in 7.62x39 and a SiG556R ... and got it out of my system.

Sold the DR300 as needing bolt / parts gun.

I did keep my pre-89 AR110C however :)
