Looking for someone who knows something about Korean made Daewoo DR-200 gas piston rifles. I am going to have the barrel swapped out so that I can shoot subsonic 300 Fireball. That is not the tricky part, I found someone who can do that fairly easily.

The real tricky part is I would like to eliminate the vent holes on the gas tube to make it quiet. Does anybody know why these vent holes were placed on the gas tube? Were they only placed there for use in full-auto firing?...it is the civilian version of the ROK's select-fre assault weapon after all.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Keith

I believe those holes bleed off the gas that is used to drive the piston. After the piston gets moving, it passes those holes and the gas is vented. The piston is already moving and now doesn't need the gas. To trap the gas inside the tube with no vents would likely over-drive the system and could create damage to your piston, bolt, or recoil management system.

I believe this issue is why piston guns are harder to suppress well when compared to direct impingement guns. This is one of those discussions you see a lot when people compare the AR platform to the AK or new SIG556 for running suppressors.

Hope that's helpful,

The thing is...I have read that people (some US Army unit) are suppressing the SIG 552 (which is a gas piston rifle). Wonder what they are doing with the excess gas in those rifles?

Anyone know about that project?

If you are going to do a 300 whisper build, PLEASE just use an AR. Dont bastardize a Daewoo. There arent nearly as many floating around. And yes, the holes are there to vent the gas. You NEED them. Oh, and speaking from experience, you probably wont be able to get a Daewoo to to cycle with 300w subs, no matter what you do. The moving parts are too heavy, and you also wont be able to siphon enough gas. I have a 300w AR and a Daewoo. Direct gas guns are quieter than gas piston guns too.

What USP_Fan said. The holes bleed off the expanded/expended gases that operated the piston system. It's the same general system used in an SKS or AK.

If you go look over on SIG forum you can find a few reviews of suppressed SIG 556's. These use the same gas system as the 552. The consensus is the same, the piston guns will suppress, but not as well as an AR.

Concerning an elite US unit using the 552? Way out of my area of experience. I'd guess the guys that are "elite" get a fair amount of latitude in what they carry. I have seen pics of some ARMY elite guys with the HK piston upper on their M4's. This would have the same advantage/disadvantage list of any other piston driven gun.
