WASHINGTON - January is about to be named "Guns Aside" month in the District of Columbia. The resolution will be announced Wednesday morning. The Justice Department and several victims' advocacy groups are using the program to address growing gun violence in D.C. D.C. Police Chief Charles Ramsey recently lifted a state of emergency, due to an 11-percent increase in gun-related crimes, including the recent murders of two teenagers. The guns aside program encourages students to wear a bracelet and sign a pledge to stay away from guns. A national "Guns Aside" campaign will begin in March.
But I thought handguns were illegal in DC.
