We've all seen the NRA ad in '04 with Kerrys finger on the trigger in Ohio. We all saw pics of Gore attaching the sling to his M-16 in Vietnam with the muzzle pointed at his head. We all shook our heads When Dick (R) shot his buddy in the face...........

Now a thread on an Oregon Democratic gun Caucus?
Who out there knows of any Democratic elected official in the House, the Senate, or other high up state and federal positions that:

Have a notable firearms collection?
Have any registered NFA weapons?
Hunt on a regular basis?
Are members of major pro-gun groups (NRA included)?
Anyone who, or has a bodyguard who does, carries a handgun/smg while in DC?:D

that was Gore.

I'm sure there are some pro-RKBA Democrats out there, the problem is that they don't matter in the grand scheme of things because the party itself is so staunchly anti-RKBA that they will NEVER allow their fellow Democrats who happen to be pro-gun implement any sort of reduction of gun control or *gasp* an expansion of gun rights.

I am not sure what bearing any of your questions have specifically on Democrats.

You do know that President Bush would answer all those questions "no" too, dont you, not that it really matters?

Whether someone collects guns or hunts has little bearing on their grasp of the 2nd Amendment.

Agreed, curiousity killed the cat, as they say. Simply wondering if anyone has any knowledge of any true firearms collectors on the "other" side.

I know that Jay Rockefeller who voted for the AWB twice had or has a Colt AR-15 rifle.

+1 on Jay Rockefeller. He has quite a collection is my understanding. And voted for the AWB.

See they have theirs, so why should they care if you or your children can get theirs. (That appies to much more than firearms, too.)

Jay Rockefeller has a very large gun collection, including eeevil, baby-killing assault weapons of death.

There are several Democratic Congressmen who are NRA members, inlcuding Dingell, Volkmer, and the guy from Montana whose name is escaping me.

The problem is that they are more than offset by the radical socialists that control the party and its agenda.

This issue seems to be almost as much demographic as party. Democrats who come from rural areas often are far more pro-gun than urban "conservatives". While I didn't vote for him, Senator Ken Salazar (D) from this state is a gun owner and hunter. He grew up on a ranch in the Southwest corner of the state.

However, this does not mean that he won't side with the other dem's in DC when the issue comes up. It would seem more often than not both parties sell out on gun owners anyway.

The NRA is supporting the Democrat over the Republican candidate in the Nebraksa Senate race.

As a side note: This is the first time I really ever examined that picture of Gore and, I've got to say, I've come away from it with more respect for Gore. And a LOT less respect for the people that used the picture to ridicule him.

Consider the following:

  • The magazine is out of the gun
  • The gun appears to be canted with the butt towards the foreground and the muzzle towards the background
  • Gore's head appears to be canted towards the foreground and out of the plane of the muzzle
Imagine you just cleaned your weapon and have verified it clear, and now need to re-attach the sling to the upper.

Furthermore:
  • The man is clearly in-country, NOT in the Tennessee National Guard
  • The man is clearly carrying a full load of issued gear

I guess the next guy that wants to ridicule Gore (for this picture) should show me a picture of themselves, cleaning their weapon in-country with a full load of ground-pounder gear before I decide to listen to them. Where are all the pictures of Republican candidates in-country in Vietnam?

I dunno...

Maybe the republicans were busy using their guns, and NOT pointing them at their heads for a photo shoot? As to being no pictures of me in country holding a water buffalo to my head is.... I was roughly 6 and my CO made us take naps in the afternoon so we wouldnt be cranky while hunting for Charlie.

Famous Liberals with guns.

The famous liberal, GW Bush not only has an illegally imported handgun, (Saddams Browning Highpower), he has it in his office in Washington, DC.

None of that pesky paperwork for the big Libs!

That's true. But it could lose them lots of support among their anti-gun constituency, and so is very useful to know. It also helps in debates to know which of the opponents of the Second Amendment have concealed-carry permits, armed bodyguards, etc.

Ok OK, I wasn't trying to start a ploitical debate:D
Just trying to determine if there were any notable Democrats into firearms.....

Exactly. There are plenty of pro-gun Dems out there. Alas the current party leadership whips them into line when they get into a national level.

I don't like Al Gore.. as someone who grew up in Tennessee, I can say the local impression of him is that he isn't much of a Tennessean. Between all his time in Washington and private school up North, he got so Yankee-fied most folk down here wouldn't recognize him.

That said.... I agree with Snake Eyes' assessment of the picture. Haven't a clue where or when it was taken, but the empty magwell and off-axis barrel have always led me to believe it isn't nearly the "dummy shot" some here say it is.

Kerry's pics and words on the other hand...

He may have owned a rifle as a kid but he's no friend of the second amendment

There's a semi-stupid show on OLN I think called "Shooting Gallery". One of the interesting things I saw on a recent episode was a shooting competition between various members of congress. There were 3-4 Democrats there that knew how to handle a shotgun. I was pretty impressed. I can't remember their names, but I think they were primarily from western states.

Have a good one,
Dave
