Dept of Homeland Security Buys SIGs (merged threads)

I don't have a problem with either guns in the contract. I own a USPcLEM .40 and like it. What's going to be interesting is to see the caliber selected for the various agencies within DHS.

Example: When Customs merged with INS they formed CBP which has 9mm Glocks and .40 Berettas and H&Ks. Which new gun and what caliber will be left standing? Will it be a rapid "cutover" or a phased transition? WHAT WILL THEY DO WITH THE SURPLUS GUNS?:D

Either way they're set and couldn't have done better....I'm first and foremost a SIG man, but HK is my 2nd choice. And they picked both!

*applauds*

Hopefully someone will engage brain and make sure the ones that are likely to be near salt water (Coast Guard, etc.) will be constructed of a material or have a finish that can withstand corrossion more readily.
Maybe they'll opt for HKs, and it won't be a problem. At least one person who had considerable first-hand knowledge/experience with SIGs and HKs stated the HK laughs at saltwater.

Both SIG and HK each got contracts for up to 65,000 pistols over the next 5 yrs. Agencies under DHS could end up buying all SIGs and no HKs, or all HKs and no SIGs, or a mix, or none of either...

Models contracted for:

HK
P2000
P2000SK
USP compacts

SIG
P229RDAK
P226RDAK
P239DAO

The HKs in 9/40/357, the SIGS in 9/40 cuzz DHS can get SIG 357s under prior Secret Service deals. If Glock hadn't been eliminated cuzz guns broke during testing, their contract might have been for just 40/357, since DHS already had deals w Customs for Glock 9s...

Any agency under DHS can buy those guns at at that set price. Or stick w what they have until the next 5 year contract.

The USCG decided to buy 12,000 SIGs in .40 caliber. ;)

Kinda off the sunject, but is there any way to find out who participated in the trials?

I'm kinda curious to see how FN did if they even competed? After all, my tax dollars and liberties paid for this. I think they should send me a little thank you gift. You can keep your sigs nd HK's though (although the USPs are cool) I'll take an FNP-40 with three full cap magazines.

The usual suspects?

Do know SA even entered XDs w no grip safety... dunno about FNP/Browning Pro. That _is_ a nice pistol; I like mine better than the SIG/HK.

IIRC, the ICE guys did the testing. Same guys who thought Beretta was the gun to buy in 94 and again in 99...

The biggest part of DHS is ICE/CBP, who may have decided to stick with/standardize on the Glocks in 9 minimeter. ;)

Does anyone know if these new weapons are just going to replace existing weapons or is the govt. planning on expanding homeland security a lot in the near future? :what:

Mostly it's replacing and standardizing weapons in the new agencies under DHS. For example ICE and CBP are both made up from parts of different agencies. Big agencies, like US Customs, INS, and Border Patrol. They had a variety of weapons, and weapons policies, so there are logistics problems created by having organizations being mixed together, plus some of those agencies were due for new guns anyway.

Oh great, more armed Federal Agents.

We won't be able to pass gas without getting arrested shortly.
