How much of a deterent to a crime by an armed assailant is a Open Carry?? The thing I see is if he gets the drop on you you are screwed. Thoughts on this???

depends on the person doing the crime i suppose.....

if its just some kids looking to score a quick buck.....chances are good theyll leave you alone.....

if its some dude strung out on crack storming into the bank like its Normandy......you might not fare so well....

What I've been wondering is why rob a store. Rob the one with the gun, you can get more money for the gun than the store will have. It wouldn't take long to get 3 or 4 Guns. Also you can pick the brand that is most wanted. Makes sense to me.

You've just cracked open an old can of worms.

M-Cameron's response was pretty much on the mark. He'd probably agree though that, in his two examples, the bad guy probably wouldn't notice a customer open carrying a 12-gauge.

If it deters a criminal, and nothing happens, how would you know whether it deterred a crime or not?

They get 'a drop on you' you are pretty much screwed OC or CC.

You never know when you might need a gun.

You never know what someone else is thinking.

You never know how crazy someone that might rob a store is.

Based on the above assumptions, and the fact that most of us carry not because we "need" to, but "just in case" we need to, it would be prudent to conceal carry.

None at all. It may make the criminal wait until you leave to commit the crime but it will not do anything to prevent it. Thats if the criminal even notices. What if I was there, a silly old CC'er... I am going about my business... hear "This is a stick up :)" and you decide to "skin your smoke wagon :)" and I turn around and see TWO bad guys?

I have never tried crack, but I bet that situational awareness takes a hit.

I stick with CC being safer. Just my silly opinion on a Friday afternoon.

(Disclaimer: The writer of this post does not believe that all armed robbers are smoking crack but it makes me feel better to think they are.....)

Smoking Crack

I don't know or not if they are smoking crack. If they are they will probably shoot you once they notice your gun. If CC they may not. If OC and they don't shoot you they will for sure take your gun. If CC they may not notice the gun giving you the opportunity when he leaves or walks away to retrieve your weapon. I have never had this situation or carried either way. If Illinois ever goes carry I may find out.

Meth Addicts

Meth addicts [as well as crack heads], may become paranoid in an instance;
and if they need a quick fix, they don't care whether or not you are armed.
I always prepare for the worst, paying attention too my surroundings; as
well as using a high rise OWB holster when open carrying. That way, I can
keep an elbow on my weapon when in a hostile environment; in which I try
to avoid at all cost~! ;) :D
