I had to laugh today. A Dick’s Sporting Goods store just opened here last weekend and I’ve never been in one before. I stopped in today to see what it was like. The only firearms they had were some hunting rifles and a few shotguns. On one of the back racks, they had some black nylon pistol holsters, but there were no handguns in the counter display cases. I asked the clerk if they had any reloading supplies…. NO. Then I asked why they had holsters but no handguns.
The clerk said: We don’t have handguns or reloading supplies for the same reason we don’t have any AR type rifles…. Our CEO is a wennie!.... I have to wonder how long he will have his job.

To say never is a long long time, but Dicks has never sold handguns that I can remember and that's been over 15 years now. Their stock has always been hunting rifles and shotguns, and I don't ever remember seeing any reloading supplies in any of their stores (we have 3 of them around here)

Dick's opened near me maybe 6 years ago. I've visited maybe 3 times and have not been impressed. Seems like a fashion outlet.

I did score some Ultramax 5.56 there once. The price was so good that I think it was mis-marked. That was about 2 ammo panics ago.

Too many other options around here (Cabela'a, Academy & a new Gander Mtn) all closer than Dick's.

You're right about the Ultramax ammo as Dick's sales prices on it seemed like it was their version of a loss leader to get people into their stores. I stocked up on it at the time as I found it to be pretty decent practice ammo.

The firearms department at the Dick's near me is decorated in the style of a "Victorian gentlemen's clubroom." I think they're making a conscious effort to cater to the "Fudd" element, with a certain "snob appeal." They don't allow modern guns, such as AR's, or handguns, to darken their door. Once in a while they put accessories, such as gun cases, on clearance. In those instances, you might find bargains there. But on the whole I think it's a matter of time before they get out of the gun business altogether.

The name of the store fits them. I've been once and will never darken their doors again. We had one open up here and like a bunch of others I showed up early in hopes of getting some ,22lr. I did but as I was checking out they demanded my birthday and my credit card. I said no then asked for the manager. Same request so I left everythin on the counter and walked out the door.

They are the ones with a basketball on the sign/name right? That is never a good indication of a firearm retailer.

Dick's actually started where I live. Way back when, they were a true hunting/fishing store. They sold ARs until Sandy Hook and then canceled all existing orders from their Black Friday sale and stopped carrying them all together. They are now opening stores under the Field & Stream name which do sell ARs. Won't shop at either.

When .22 ammo was plentyful dicks had some good buys on the target stuff and you could use coupons/points on ammo.

I go in there for golf related things from time to time(actually a good golf shop) and check the ammo supply.

They haven't had a bulk pack in 3 months says the guy behind the counter. This is after 10 minutes of chatting/hanging out(He knows I know the golf pro) so I am inclined to believe him.

Its a potential source for ammo so I dont bash them too much. I will say that right before sandy hook they stocked AR's and the day after they pulled all of them and sent them back(also according to the guy behind the counter).

I have read about the "Dick's" company starting a store called Field and Stream. This was going to be an outdoor only store. They were going to start to sell ar's again. I have read nothing about it since.
I have bought some ammo and cleaning products from them. I usually stay away from this store.

I used to buy re-manufactured .38 Special ammo from Dicks when it was $5.99 for a box of 50 in the early 2000's. That is all I really bought from the store.

Before we had GI Joe's, great stores with lots of local and near local stuff, but they closed down, and we lacked a real sporting goods store

Dick's opened a few branches here, one attached to the very upscale and overpriced Washington Square mall. went in, saw near-REI prices for normal stuff, asked where the shooting supplies were and was told they carry nothing of the sort.

Have never gone back.

The one near me carried a decent supply of over priced ammo before the scare, but afterwards its almost like they decided not to restock their ammo, even though they were selling it a near double prices. I could have sworn I saw an AR before the scare as well, but I may be mistaken.

You guys can whine about Dicks all you want. It's their business. They can sell guns. Or not. It's their prerogative.

You know what they're all about before you go in.

I don't shop there either. But I doubt they care. They sell the whole gamut of anything and everything that falls under the category of anything even remotely related to "sporting goods."

I've only been in there once but it seems I remember they sold the whole range of golf stuff, kayaks, spandex zen yoga contortionist's prom outfits and, yes, some gun stuff.

But we know this and yet, somebody always posts something negative because Dicks doesn't sell ARs.

Give it a rest already. Do what I do. When I want a firearm I go somewhere that actually sells guns. What I do not do is go to a store that I already know isn't going to have what I want, then come onto the internet and complain they don't have what I want.

you are right. the dicks by me never price gouged on ammo. By luck I happened to get federal auto match 22 for 17 bucks for 325 which it was before ammo disaster. the girl told me for 7 months the same guys are there in the morning to buy it up

I used to give DSG a harder time than I do now.

As stated in the previous post, it's not really a true gun store - but rather a sporting goods store that happens to sell some long guns, ammo and accessories.

Sometimes I have gotten some okay ammo deals from them in the past. I will usually at least check out their weekly circular if I'm in the market for some ammo.

They will do special orders for you on some long guns. I am considering using them to get a bolt .223 that is not normally in stock most places.

Their prices on most guns are fairly reasonable in my experience. Better than what I have seen at Gander or Bass Pro, that's for sure. Granted the selection at DSG is (much) more limited than either GM or BP.

It's another vendor option; no more or less. Sometimes getting some ammo there today beats hoping Wal-Mart will have the ammo you wanted at the rock-bottom pricing we were accustomed to seeing sometime this year. Plus I don't have to hunt down an associate with the key to open the ammo shelf!

Got a gripe, take it to the chaplin. If one doesn't like something one should stay away from it. I don't go to Dicks because I don't like it. No gripe, just fact.

Seems to me that there are a lot of stores that won't sell handguns. I don't know what it is about them, I don't remember Walmart selling handguns when I lived outside of California (maybe they do elsewhere, but they didn't where I lived), we had a few sporting goods places that only sold rifles as well. Now, in California, it's the same thing, Dicks doesn't sell hand guns, Big 5 doesn't sell handguns, and both of them sell ammo and holsters and other accessories for handguns. It's not that they think handguns are evil. I don't know what the deal is. But they do enough business in guns to keep business low enough for the real gun stores that we have limited gun stores and limited selection on handguns.

Dicks sucks.
I haven't darkened their doors since they pulled all the stock after Sandy Hook. Won't be going to Field And Stream if they open one around here. They are not our friend. Screw Dicks.............

What's worse is that they do not allow people to test the trigger on any gun they are purchasing. I'll go to a real gun shop to purchase a gun before going to them. I have no problem paying a few dollars more so I can properly evaluate the gun.

We have several around here and one is decent but mainly because it was a gallians before and they had to fill the space somehow. They do have a good selection of guns there but I mainly like goin there to tease the wife bout the first time we went and she says to me and I quote "I never seen a dicks this big" to which I replied ive heard that befire

That has become more common. Bass Pro is the same way. I once asked a Bass Pro employee to see if a holster they sold would fit a particular handgun they sold. He said even HE wasn't allowed to remove the trigger guard lock to check it for me.
