difference between 9mm luger & 9x21

9mm Luger is also called 9x19
9x21 was created so that the Italians could have a 9mm round
The 2mm difference is in the case length (for example .380 auto is a 9x17 and 9mm Mak is also 9x18 but the 9x18 uses a 0.363 bullet instead of a 0.355 like the 380 auto or 9mm Luger).
You are probably reloading for 9mm Luger...

NO. You are correct.
I’m not 100% on this, so don’t quote me, but I think that they use different size bullets. Also the 38 Super and 9x23 have different extractor grooves, the 9x23 having a much deeper and wider extractor groove designed for more positive extraction.

There are a number of 9mm cartridges on cases 23mm long.
.38 Super is 9x23SR for Semi Rimmed in Europe, with straight case. (Also the earlier, less powerful .38 ACP)
9mm Steyr is 9x23 rimless straight case
9mm Bergman-Bayard = 9mm Largo in Spain, is 9x23 rimless tapered case.
9x23 CP is 9x23 rimless tapered, same external dimensions as Largo but beefed up for heavy IPSC Major loads.
9x23 Winchester is 9x23 rimless tapered, with very hard brass for safe use with high pressure loads in mass production Colts.
9mm Super Comp is Starline equivalent of 9x23 Win, but different brass hardness, thickness, and case volume call for specific loads.
.38 Super Comp is Starline brand, 9x23 rimless straight case for better feeding in widebody guns chambered for Super.
.38 TJ is also a rimless version of .38 Super, 9x23 straight rimless, different extractor groove from Super Comp.
There may be others I don't recall, but those are the main players.
Do NOT load 9x23 Win in other guns that it just happens to chamber in. A good .38 Super will hold it, but an old surplus Star or Steyr would not.

I load and shoot 9x19, 9x21, .38 Super and 9x23 Winchester. As noted, they are all different. The 9x23 is much stronger brass than any of the others, and is a quite impressive round.
I've been working on building a 9x25 Dillon, but it's been on the back burner for awhile. That's the 10mm case necked down to 9mm, and capable of some pretty impressive velocities from a handgun. I'd like to get some time to revive this project, so could someone please tell my wife to stop with the house remodelling ideas...............
