Not sure where to put this thread. I outgrew my diy rack from 6 months ago already:)

I cannot post multiple pics on one single message. I apologize for all the photos! Just wanted to show off my skills or lack there of!

3rd step

I spent about 45$ in lumber and screws and stain!

5th step

I knew I need some reinforcement for all my guns. So why not add dividers for ammo storage.

6th step

I then needed to add a support brace for the top.

Had to stain it so it would look a bit better!

Materials list

I used 1inch whiteboard from lowes

I bought (4) 1x12x6 boards
(1) 1x12x8 board
Hex wood screws 2 1/8th inch

I made this one 48 inches wide by 46 1/2 inches tall. I installed shelves 35 inches from top gun rest. This fits my ar-15. Shotguns and long guns.

I would consider using the left-over piece from the barrel rests on the bottom for butt stock spacers.

It will keep 13 guns setting that close together spaced and keep them from turning sideways and banging into each other.

Yep, and depending on how dry or humid it is where you live, a piece of felt or foam where the barrels rest will help protect the finish

Thanks

Good advice. I will use all of them! I am going to build some version fork handguns that I can mount of wall in closet so I have fast access to handguns and ammo!

I wish I had woodworking skills that would allow an outcome like that! Alas, I need 'insert slot A into slot B and align until slit F and slit G are parallel......'

Ccctennis, very nice! Here is my attempt at a gun rack with supplemental shelving. Not quite finished yet, I hope to take a router and clean up the edges. Also waiting for the weather to be nicer so I can take it out to the garage and stain it a nice dark tone like you have yours. For the gun barrel rests I used a hole saw but I just set the pilot bit in about 1/4" from the edge. So there is a bit of concavity to it, but I intend to smooth that out prior to finishing. I also used a masonite backer just to keep my stuff from falling out the back side.

Lots of other good ideas and tips from this thread, I may have to utilize as well!

If anyone wants the plans/cut sheet PM me.

That gun rack was a common Jr. High School wood shop project for my dads students clear into the 90s.

"I like the way you used a hole saw bit to make that barrel rest, by first drilling the holes - then cutting the board in half. Genius. I made a similar gun rack, but used a jig saw to cut the barrel rests in a vee shape. It don't look near as nice as yours!"

This.

And I second that you may want to consider foam on top to protect the barrels and something to hold the butts in place. I angled a board at the bottom and covered it with foam, it works great. Mine certainly doesn't look as good as yours because I was not smart enough to use the hole saw/cut board in half technique and used a jigsaw.

I also have a portable version I made from scrap lumber to hold a dozen guns when I have trap shooting days for friends, I think it cost me about $2 in bolts, foam and electricity to make. :D
